Overhead Map Light

So when I bought this car, the map light was missing. The bulb is there and works, but the swivel part is gone. Even the ring that holds it on was in two pieces in the glove box. I have no idea where to get a new one. I've searched all the sites I know including ebay, and none of the local junkyards ever have Camaros. Does anyone know where I can get new pieces for this?

That you'll find anything new is doubtful. An advert on our site's classifieds might prove useful.

Re: Overhead Map Light

You'll also need the trim piece to hold in the swivel. It has 3 prongs on the rear which fit into your space. Example here:

Re: Overhead Map Light

i've got the map ball from my for sale ad still

i dont have the ring or gasket though(sold)

as for the felt gasket for the ring, you can make one very easily just buying a sheet of felt from the craft store, cut the size you need twice and glue the two pieces together, it makes for a nice snug fit

Re: Overhead Map Light

Thanks for the tips everyone. Sorry I got sidetracked these past couple weeks. Caveman, hopefully you still have it. I may just try to glue the ring back together, I can't remember if it's a clean break or if I'm missing any shards.

Re: Overhead Map Light

Does anyone have a picture of these pieces of felt? My car came with nothing and the swivel part and ring I bought didn't come with the felts.

Re: Overhead Map Light

The rings I could see being useful to duplicate, but the ball part is metal, and I just don't see them breaking. What I want to do is put an LED and a lens inside of it to make a somewhat focused beam. Screw trying to track down the original bulb base just to use a crappy incandescent and an aged-yellow non-focusing lens. This may be one of those projects I talk about that I never end up doing, because I can't find the parts necessary to complete it. Lens mounting systems either seem to be 1/2" or 1". The former is too small for my taste, and the latter is too large to be possible.

Re: Overhead Map Light

Interesting. Thank you. I thought there were two pieces of felt. What keeps it from moving up and down? There seems to be quite a bit of distance between the top and bottom "seats." Almost 1/4". I can see how the felt would stop it from flopping around, but I don't see how it would stop it from being forced up and down.

EDIT: Argh! I didn't see that you edited and added a second picture. That explains my previous paragraph! Wow.

Re: Overhead Map Light

I put a cree LED from a busted 1157 bulb, extremely bright & creates about a 3ft dia beam.I tried using the cree's lens (looks like a projector lens), but it focused the light to roughly a 6' dia.

I've gotten the map light bulbs and base from overhead lights in ford explorers. Not sure what years they are but they have a dual light assembly above the rearview mirror.Perfect fit for the roof console
