Monster Tach location

Any idea of a good place to mount one of these? I'd like to get one and try one out, but my dashpad is flawless and I really don't like the idea of drilling holes into it. I also think it's pointless having it directly next to the steering wheel requiring me to look down at it.

Anyone have any pictures? I haven't bought one yet and I am trying to decide if it's worth it to me given that I'll be drag racing regularly in the car once the motor goes back in. Pictures are a plus.

Re: Monster Tach location

Monster tach is cool looking & easy to see if put in a good spot, this I will agree.
I wouldnt screw a good dash for any tach either.
Not what you want to hear, but what about an autometer digital shift light // tach?
Mount it in the corner so you can see it without moving your eye too far off the road // track?

Can you show me what you're referring to? Doesn't NEED to be a monster tach, I just need something that looks good and functions for what I need. I already have a single pod pillar on the left side for my vacuum psi.

Dude, that's actually kind of what I was thinking about but didn't think they made them. Hmmmmmmmmmm. I'd buy you a beer right now if I could. looks like I could put that in my pod pillar potentially?

Re: Monster Tach location

LOL!!

IDK if 2.063 would fit, or the length?

I remembered them 'cause I wanted 1 for the '74 Camaro before I sold it.

( edit )
5 " length.

Is that ok for a pod?

Might be a gamble for some extra work, but... this looks right up my alley. Has a nice subtle look to it while still getting the job done quite nicely.

Re: Monster Tach location

It seems like a bad location at first glance but it's nearly perfect. It doesn't block my view yet it's right in my face. It also doesnt mount to the dash pad or hit the dashpad. It mounts directly into the plastic molding on the a-piller which is easily replaceable later on as all cars had these same a-pillars. Dashpads area lot more expensive. I just used a couple of rubber washers and screwed some screws straight into the plastic after drilling slightly undersized holes for them. Even when I bang into it and knock it around nothing comes apart or breaks, there's enough flex in the a-pillar molding that nothing gets hurt... as far as looks, I prefer it under the center vents, but I think this is a more practical location.

I also have a shift light where the cig lighter used to be. I used to have a shift light on the tach itself, but I wanted to streamline a little. The wires going to the shift light annoyed me. The wires from the tach go straight under the dashpad and stay hidden.

And yes, I know it's rotated. Helps me see when to shift when I cant see the shift light. Noon = shift

Also, my shift light over there is just like the summit one that t-top posted. Just has a **** on the back for what RPM activates it. Wired it up. snug fit it into a hole on the cluster and it looks like it belongs there. You have an 88 though so it wouldnt work for you as well as it would for me. But just a thought...

Re: Monster Tach location

Infernal, do you have any other pictures? That's the only logical place I could think of to mount a tach where you've currently got it. Spending $200 to mount it AWAY from my face is silly, and that doesn't leave me much room for mounting in my car without destroying my dashpad.

I made a bracket to mount the tack on the dash. using the factory screws at the back (by window) and under the front chin of the dash.

don't know if I have a shot of the front of the chin
but the strap comes out from the front of the dash about 1 1/2"inch and rolls under to a screw/bolt under the dash

using felt under the strap to keep the dash nice
you can just make out the roll at the front of the dash. tach is bolted to strap

Re: Monster Tach location

this shot you can just make out/see the front how it rolls under.
tons of room from tach to wheel. the pics don't show it.. but lot of room rock solid.
all of the auto meter stuff can be removed. with out leaving any holes.
by the way ..have replaced every auto meter part in pics with the new procomp liquid filled gauges./recall tach. so all the sport comp stuff if up for a new home!

Re: Monster Tach location

What's your reason for wanting a monster tach? The reason I ask is that rather than deal with trying to stick a giant 5" redundant gauge somewhere, perhaps you could just mount a shift light?

Precision tachometer more than anything while being easy to see. Currently the shift light tach that havoc showed me looks like my best bet so far, but I want to keep my options open. They're all around the same price anyways.

Re: Monster Tach location

Not a pretty picture but it gives you a great idea of how it looks from the driver's seat. As I said, you'd expect it to get in the way but it doesnt at all. I think it looks better under the center vents, but it's less useful there.

I know for me when Im shifting, it helps to have the tach AND the light... just a psychological thing. I can keep an eye on the tach out of the corner of my eye, so Im not surprised when the shift light yells at me. Not really a big deal, I could live without either, but i prefer both. I also have a manual and I use my tach to figure out how fast Im going. Factory tach is SUPER inaccurate. Although I found out how to fix it form a thread on here... I have to wire in a potentiometer across two leads and dial it in til it's right, I think usually its around 200kohms but Im not positivie, been a few months since I read it. But even then you're looking at as much as a plus/minus 300 RPM discrepancy from real RPM depending on where in the rev range you are, and that's not good enough for me.

2 1/16 = 2 .0625

Looks like it might be able to work. I am going to try it. Looks like 3388 is the pod version that I am looking for.

Re: Monster Tach location

I mounted my tach like articwhiteZ but my bracket mounts to the screw under the dash pad above the cluster. I used the factory screw that holds the dash pad down to the dash.

In the pics, the tach is above the dash pad. I have reversed the bracket and now have it under the dashpad. I didnt have do any drilling. Just use a thick enough bracket to keep it stable. Its just a long L bracket.

This is from my car before I put it in. 2 1/16 stewart warner rpm gauge and shift light. Personally the best option and the cleanest in my opinion

I actually REALLY like the way you set it up. That's actually perfect for where I wanted a gauge like that positioned. I'm still debating on it. Really up in the air at this point.

The good thing is, I didn't have to pull the dash pad. Look under the dash close to the cigarette lighter. There is a screw that holds the pad down to the dash. Just remove the screw and put the screw back through the bracket. Its simple and you don't have to remove the dash pad.

If you don't like the tach above the dash, just flip the mount and it will be under the dash in front of the original tach. I did the flip after this pic was took so now it hangs under the dash pad now. Maybe I can get a pic of the bracket and the way the tach hangs now.

Ok guys, I took some pics to better explain how the tach is mounted. Also how it looks now that I flipped it to be under the dash. I like it much better.
