Just wanted some oppions on this center console repair. I put in a b&m megashifter for our cars and deciede it was a good time to reglue the vinyl that was pellung away. Beside the peeling the center console is perfect. I have a new shifter plate on its way. I put glue all in between the vinyl/foam and plastic then clapped it for tonight I am anxious to see if it will hold by tomorrow morning. I just used a crafts and art multipurpose glue. It is suppose to be for vinyl plastics and leathers ect what do you guys think will it hold?
I didn't work with that glue. The glue is Sobo so don't use it. I am going back tonight with gorilla glue. Also I wouldn't remove any foam that would distort the look after repairing. So I will grab some gorilla glue then clamp over night then reupdate. I'm thinking the gorilla should hold!
Ok, thanks for the heads up. Gorilla glue should work. Now that you mention it I think I recall reading about using that.
Good point about the foam. I was thinking about it coming loose from the vinyl.
Okay got the gorilla glue and gummed it all up in the center console. I clamped it all down and let it sit for a little over an hour. Bonded like a new born to a nipple! Great stuff the area j repaired almost looks better than the rest of the center console that wasn't peeling! Highly recommend this repair! It will make your peeling vinyl stick right back to the center console! Now that I have repaired it the center console is in perfect condition! Sorry I can't take pics they wont upload....
Good info. Just one question. My plastic top is also coming free from the vinyl bottom, but there is also some "rippling" in the vinyl at the top lip where the sides turn down to meet the plastic. Any good way to straighten that back out again? Apply heat maybe? IDK. And those 90 degree angles on the right side are not close to right. I may need to post pics. I'm also considering replacing the carpet, so I guess I'd better wait til I decide on that before using Gorilla glue to tamp it down.
I have fixed those side bulges.
Use the plastic weld epoxy. Get the plastic weld inside the vinyl covering and use clamps to squeeze everything back into place.
Synopsis Dave yes that is exactly what I fixed brother! Its like the common cold to our cars! And don't try anything other than gorilla glue! Nothing else works as well two part epoxy don't have anything on gorilla glue. Also one tips I didn't wet the area like gorilla glue recommends and it still.cured just fine! Don't wet in fact because it will expand too much. Just make sure you cut a piece of wood to.clamp to.the sides with lots of clamps. I will try to post before and after pics anlong with clamp pics.
No, you remove the top and run a bead of glue(underneath) then clamp it down,I used paint stirrer sticks and a couple clamps.
And also I used s Hot glue gun and it worked very well, still holding.
I also used Gorilla Glue . Worked like a champ. Just remember the glue will expand to 4X it's size, so be careful on the amount used.
AND a buttload of clamps!
Good timing Bob! This is something I hope to address this summer.
Dave, I've been putting this off on the TTA. Finally did it yesterday. It took about 1/2 hour to take the plate up and out and then test all the places to put the clamps. Going out now and take the clamps off. (Been 24hrs!) And take a few pics
I use 3M products to glue mine after i clean the plastic and glue surfaces with a wax and grease remover.
I also use clamps and wood sticks just like that..
Thanks. It looks soooo much better. Thing is, my 85 console is FLAWLESS. The 88 and 89 needed the repair. I did the 88 repair in 89...only a year old at the time!
