G6 / Corvette steering wheel

G6 / Corvette steering wheel

Well this project has been a year in the making but I finally got the steering wheel on tonight. Next month I can buy the airbag and post pics with that but until then here ya go. Here is what I did to install it follow at your own risk.

press out the original collar out of the G6 wheel.

Buy a Grant steering wheel kit (not pilot) and lathe down the adapter to the appropriate size hole. you have to make a step for the wheel to sit on.

Use a dremel to cut splines on the outside of the lathed collar.

Hammer the new collar back into the steering wheel caked with JB weld. Make sure to get the gap between the wheel and the collar filled completely with JB weld.

Put on the new wheel and enjoy.

Should look a lot better than the stock wheel! What are your plans for the steering wheel controls? Will you try to utilize any or was there an option without that you may be able to get blank panels to replace the buttons? Also, will you be connecting the G6 airbag? Any diffeneces regarding the sensor(s), connections, etc? I'd love to be able to replace my ugly firebird wheel....

I like the wheel. Do you have any closer pics of what you are talking about with the JB weld? I know that stuff is strong but your trusting your life to this glue. Just want to get a clear idea of how it mounts.

I plan on putting in the g6 air bag but not attaching it. The only wheel that makes the blank spoke covers is the corvette but they are more expensive on ebay than the g6 wheel even though they are the same wheel. As for the button controls I suppose you could hook them up but I plan on just buying the blank covers if they ever pop up on ebay. If you're worried about the airbag light I suppose you could just put a resistor in between the two wire leads that go to the airbag, my original airbag was never hooked up anyway and the previous owner just put black tape over the light. This is by far the best looking and feeling wheel I've ever used.

The JB weld has a lap shear strength of 1085 psi and using the old formula for torque shear stress Tc/J you can apply a 20 lb force on the steering wheel before you shear the connection. This is assuming you have a smooth shear connection without any normal forces or splines to transfer the load. So the 20 lbs is on the very low end. The flex strength is 7000 psi and is more representative of the maximum stress that the JB weld could endure in this situation meaning you would have to apply a 140 lb force on the wheel to break the bond. So I'm assuming the strength is somewhere between 20 and 140 lbs. I've cranked on it as hard as I could and it hasn't budged, it was starting to pull the steering column down. If you wanted some more strength you could use the Devcon stuff that has a higher shear strength. Plus being dead is clearly better than driving with one of these third gen air bag wheels The pics are of the collar I lathed down and the steering wheel with the old collar punched out.

Wow a year in the making? I just did this in one evening. And did it correctly, with GM parts. Bolted together for about $75 at a u pull and pay. It was on a 93 bird but should be the same. Cavaliers share the same upper shaft as fbodys. But in 04 they went to newer style splines. Pulled a 04 shaft for 15, g6 wheel for 20, airbag for 25. No JB weld required.

I think people wondering about JB weld would be really surprised to find out how modern aircraft are built... Literally composites, aluminum and "glue"
