Random cable under the dash

So I've done some looking and don't know what to even type in for some info. There's this cable under my driver side dash that isn't hooked to anything on the one end. When I move my gear shift the cable slides in and out. Can anyone tell me what this is?

Interlock cable. It is supposed to keep you from removing your ignition key unless the car is in Park.

Not exactly. It's supposed to prevent the key cylinder from moving into the LOCK position and locking the steering wheel unless the transmission is in PARK.
