need help pulling this wheel

hey guys i have a 91 GTA im trying to swap the wheels on. I have a 87 GTA wheel buti cant seem to get it off the column. its proving a bit more dificult than my 91. i assume its user error but i cant seem to figure out how to tackle it. Do i have to remove the 4 little silver pins? i thought they were allen heads but they go straight through and theyre rounded out....any help is appreciated! thanks in advance!

Re: need help pulling this wheel

You will need a steering wheel puller...........just remove the big center nut and then use the puller to remove the wheel.

I have one. but i dont see a lock nut or a retainer nut on the end?? i tried throwing the puller on it(had to bend the ends a little to fit it into the steering wheel but it wont come free. i have to be missing something? or torque the puller insanely tight??

Re: need help pulling this wheel

Sometimes it takes a bit of force to pull the wheel from the column, but it's just as easy to bend the puller bolts and/or end up trying to pull it while out of alignment. (IMO, the alignment is very important.) If that happens it becomes cockeyed and will become even more difficult. Sometimes it's a matter of repeatedly applying pressure and releasing to get it to come loose.

I would try finding or renting a puller that doesn't require you to have to "bend the ends." (I don't know what that means.) I pulled the same steering wheels many times without having to modify anything.

You may be getting more basic responses because in most cases there isn't much more to say.

BTW, the four silver pins are rivets and are part of the steering wheel itself. They simply hold the plastic part onto the metal part of the wheel.

I think they are trying to point you in the right direction. The nut, if it was there, has already been removed. Time for the puller:

Thread a bolt into the threaded holes at 3 and 9 o'clock (red). The wheel puller threaded rod will push against the end of the column, at center (green). Wheel should come off. Depends on rust, or how much effort the PO spent to cram it on. Try a longer lever on the wheel puller.

Re: need help pulling this wheel

Sometimes they are really on there and even a little corroded, in this case a little penetrating oil and some light tapping on the puller with a hammer to jar it loose helps.

Re: need help pulling this wheel

thanks for the replies guys i do appreciate it. I dont have the steering wheel puller that was pictured above. ill attach a pic of the one i have. in the pic ull see the two pieces that replace what would be the outer bolts on the puller. those are what i had to bend to fit into the cavity to thread on to the wheel. i guess ill just try some penetrating oil and try a bit more muscle. i was just scared i would break something

Re: need help pulling this wheel

You could use this nice inexpensive wheel puller,it's a nice addition to the tool box

The pic in your post above is a depressor tool for the wheel plate.

Re: need help pulling this wheel

The tool in #9 is for AFTER the wheel has been removed. That pushes the lock ring down, to remove the snap ring, then the locking ring (locks the wheel in place when key is removed) comes off, providing access to the turn signal and key cylinder.

The tool in #9 PULLS against the center column shaft to compress the spring behind the lock ring.
To get the wheel off you are PULLING the wheel through the two bolts of the tool screwed into in it. The center threaded rod of the tool then PUSHES against the center column shaft to PULL the wheel off of it.

Re: need help pulling this wheel

The tool in your pic is to remove the snap ring and other fiddly bits holding the clockspring (on airbag equipped vehicles) and the turn signal cam and springs for tilt if equipped for tilt. If that's the tool you are using it is doing the exact opposite of a wheel puller and pushing the wheel on tighter.
