headrest removal

I need to remove the headrests in my 1988 Trans am. The seats that are in it I have been told are the GTA fully articulating seats. I cannot figure out how to remove the headrests.

Re: headrest removal

slide a slim jim into the slot in front. It will hold the little spring loaded pin back and allow the head rest to slide up and out. Any flexible piece that fits in will work.

Re: headrest removal

I always found it to be a little more tricky, not much - but a little !

I use a scrapper,..... Pull the headrest all the way up and insert the scrapper thru the slot in the front-side of the headrest post. Push it down as far as you can ( till you feel it stop. )

Next, push the headrest AND the scrapper down at the same time, ( notice how far the scrapper goes down now compared to the first pic. )

Then; hold scrapper down and pull the headrest off. ( the scrapper is shown higher in he last pic than it should be - I had just placed the headrest & scrapper in those positions for a final pic showing the headrest removed. )

Pushing the headreat and Scrapper down at the same time pushes the scrapper past the lock pin and covers it up the lock hole on the headrest post so when the headrest is pulled back up it will slide past that locking pin without locking.

Might seem like I'm knit-picking here, but I've always had to add the step of pushing the headrest and the scrapper down to release the lock tab before the thing would pop off.

A stainless steel ruler also works.
