Custom LED Gear Indicator Mod
Owing to the distinctly lackluster shift plate light on the early 80's Camaros, I came up with an idea for building something a little bit cooler. I actually completed this a while back, but just got around to taking some final pictures. The car is a 1984 Z28, I used an ATTINY and a shift register as the control for the LEDs, and some hall effect magnet sensors to detect the selected gear. I'm quite satisfied with it:
Some breadboard testing

Testing the sensor alignment with a mockup board

Control board PCB layout

One of my bad LED board cutouts (I cut the boards with a CNC, and was still learning)

Where the lights will go

Marking and punching

Sorry, at this point I got excited and forgot to take lots of pictures. Here it is attached to the shift plate. You can see the LED board on the left soldered to the control board with solid copper wire.

LED Board on the top

The sensor board. The mounting tabs have slots cut in them for adjustment.

Re: Custom LED Gear Indicator Mod
There was someone a while back who made something very similar, except they used a small window to indicate the gear the were in, rather than the factory shift plate. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...dicator-t.html
It wouldn't be difficult to adapt mine to do the same thing.
I could certainly make some more. I'm not sure what all years it would be a drop in for. I know the shift plate was changed at some point, and the boards are specifically designed to fit on the one I have. Hit me up if anyone is interested. I just moved and don't have access to the CNC anymore, so I would have to order the boards.

I remember my buddy wanted to make a light up shift know similarly to this. This is pretty cool.
