Does anyone know where to get the little gear that goes between the odometer and the trip counter? I've bought like 3 gauge clusters on eBay with guarantees the odometer works but it doesn't. I have a 1986 Firebird Trans Am TPI... the speedometer works, I just need to find a way to replace the gear between the odometer and trip counter. Every salvaged cluster I find it's always frozen up or half the teeth have turned to dust. When I look up gears online I just find the generic 24 tooth GM odometer gear. But that gear is ok. Just the one that drives it is broken. Anybody know a part number or where to point me? Thanks.
I found that link before. My odometer is totally different than the one shown and has a broken gear I can't find. I've went through 3 salvaged clusters and 2 speedos only... They all have this same problem. The white gears are available on ebay, but I can't seem to find this driving gear that sits between the odometer and the trip counter.
Broken odometer driving gear. It drives both odometer and trip counter. The regular odometer gear is in good shape.
White gears are all ok. The driving gear is like gingerbread.
This is the whole speedo taken apart. It's the 140MPH from the automatic Trans Am TPI cluster. I got 3 of these taken apart right now and all have almost identical broken gears.
Edit: The other alternative is a speedometer/instrument repair or restoration shop.
Thank you very much. I'll try to order this gear first. I have a couple of speedos to work with before I try a speedo restoration shop. I'm afraid of the cost of the shops, if I get over a certain price point I'd go for one of those digital clusters instead.
Not really. It would be very hard to find the right size. Better to slow wiggle and break off the pin, put the new gear on with some good silicone grease then stick the shaft back in place with a little dab of JB weld or similar and tape everything together or rubber band it together for 24 hours then it's fine. I repaired 2 of these now.
