Sleek Cup Holder

So I've been wanting to add a cup holder to the camaro I bought but most of them require you cut up you center console. So the other day I was at the junkyard looking for a shifter **** and I came across a sleek cup holder. It is from a VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT. It is 1"x7.5"x5". I'll be making a sheet metal mount that I can put under the dashpad below the vents, but above the dashboard. Hopefully without cutting anything. I'll be posting pics.

Re: Sleek Cup Holder

So I made the template for it out of cardboard. Hopefully I can transfer it to some sheet metal and cut it out and fold it to shape. If it's sturdy enough I should be able to clip it inside the dash vents. Maybe add some magnets.

Re: Sleek Cup Holder

Quick update. Got the design traced and cut an piece of sheet metal. However, my grinder skills are crap. So I had to refine a bit. One issue I ran into is that the metal is too thick to fit in between the vent and dash. I might shave abut from the vent holes. Then I should be able to slide into vent/ dash. I'll fold it to shape once I refine it. Only able to do it at work.

BTW. I'll post all measurements for sheet metal once I refine it.

Re: Sleek Cup Holder

Here are the measurements. The two prongs could be as wide as the vents (should be stronger).

I'm sure you can do something similar to what us 1st Gen Legend owners do:

http://forums.acuralegend.org/ford-t...-t53.html?t=53

Finding the space is the issue.

I haven't done this mod so I can't comment on the ease or difficulty of this modification. I just open the console compartment and drop in my beverage. The junk within holds the vessel upright.

Re: Sleek Cup Holder

Sorry for no updates. I tried folding that sheet metal and ended up damaging it. Not only that but it was too thick to fit in the vent hole. I'll figure something out. Here's where I want to mount it. If not maybe right above the a/c controls. Anyone now what's behind the dash right above the a/c controls?

Re: Sleek Cup Holder

On the earlier cars there is metal bracing that runs the width of the dash.Mostly wires & the Hvac box is behind it.

Re: Sleek Cup Holder

Well, after thinking over this I just did this. I cut out the stereo mount to fit the cup holder. I'll probably buy another cup holder, mount, and stereo. I had to make it stick out a bit so it wouldn't hit the volume kn0b. Another issue I'd that it sits at an angle. Still gotta try a soft drink cup.

Re: Sleek Cup Holder

Hmm... Imagining the sticky goo in the bottom of most cup holders inside a radio, I'm not sure about this Willis.

With all due respect to the human condition occasionally requiring refreshment of liquids, I've never understood the fascination with cup holders. Why when I was your age, cars didn't HAVE cup holders. At least they didn't unless you were a gray haired farmer with the special coffee cup with a clip on base plate that was stuck to the dash of your farm truck. We kids in the back seat of many a family truckster station wagon clutched our frosty beverages in our own two hands, or between the legs if we needed to pop a sibling in the pie-hole. Even when cup holders became common place, most cars didn't have them. By the time I graduated highschool, I could drive a 5spd pickup steering with a thigh while shifting, manipulating the clutch and gas all while sipping a Coke. I suppose the real problem is all you kids these days with your cellular telephones, and text messaging, trying to send the smiling pile of poop emojicon to your BFF while clutching, shifting, steering, etc. Just not enough hands.

I think at this point, I value having a clean interior without beverage spill stains more than a 44oz trough of cola. A bottle with a screw on lid solves 90% of the problem without altering the car... Just rambling through...

Re: Sleek Cup Holder

well it works fairly well. I was too confident at first and took a turn too fast. It will hold the cup firmly. I tried to hold on to a cup once in my thighs but it makes it hard to turn. If I happen to eat, or light a cigarette I steer with my knee. Don't really "need" it as usually I set the cup on the flat part of the center console. But when I brake, turn, or accelerate it starts sliding. This was the least intrusive way. Others cut holes in their consoles.

This has to rank as one of your more entertaining posts to date but you're beginning to sound like a grumpy old man!

Re: Sleek Cup Holder

I thought about something like that, but decided I didn't want to drill holes in my dash. So I got one of these instead.
Amazon Amazon

Fits nice and snug between the console and passenger seat.

Re: Sleek Cup Holder

I didn't cut any of my dash. instead of having a single din radio in the radio holder(?) I opened up the opening an additional 1/2". right now that cup colder is only held on by gorilla tape. I might make another 1.5 din holder out of delrin to hold both the stereo and cup holders.
