So I've looked around and for the life of me cannot find this anywhere. I wanted to buy a new one because mine is a little ripped in some spots and it's discolored. If someone can please link me to somewhere to find the one that is in the picture below that would be great! Thanks!!
It doesn't look as bad in the picture here but when you actually look at it, it's not that good.
If the wear is on the top, it should polish out. If it's on the bottom, touch up the paint and it should look ok. If all else fails, I think I've got one in the junk box.
That style was used in the later Firebirds, earlier birds didn't have an indicator showing which gear the shifter was in. Not sure when they switched, assumed it was around the 1990 mark when Pontiac changed the dash and trim along with the airbag.
You can try to tape off gear indicators on underside...small squares of tape...then shoot with black spray paint...gloss or flat, doesnt matter....then on topside, you can tape edges to a cardboard box..then use high speed buffer with 3m polish a couple times....if you got the skills, you can wet sand with 2500,like i do..lightly...then do the 3m polish..if you are really apprehensive, I would help you out, its an easy piece to mail....I have done this with great succes multiple times!..Yes, I'm ****....(no jokes here)...!!
On the Camaro indicator the back of the face can be touched up. Looking at the Firebird piece, the letters are printed on the back of a plastic sheet which is then stuck to the frame. So to get at the light spots, the pieces would have to be parted before the background could be touched up. For that matter, light spots are probably places where the bond has failed a bit. Take a close look around the edges and you should see what I mean. I'm not sure a person could get the pieces apart without creating more damage.
The late style indicator and matching shifter plate superseded the earlier part. So it's not too unusual to see them in earlier Firebirds.
Yea it's like a bond on the back stuck to the plastic. On the back of the indicator it's all red and on the front is as shown in the picture. Also I don't know jimrockford what does yours look like?
