I recently got a 1987 5.7 Iroc with a ball-type shift **** that is not sitting properly. (the **** has 2 metal bit inside, but it's only on one side on the stick)
After a bit of research, It seems the 1987 should have come with another style **** (square one), so I'm wondering what I have exactly
Any idea what kind of **** should actually be used in my scenario ?
The round shift ***** with button on top that fit that shift lever came in one or two tab variations. No idea what years are which or anything, but if you shift ball has two and looks like the lever only has one it will never seat right. Should go all the way on and be held in place by a circlip in that groove on the lever. You either need the correct ball or find a way to lose the extra tab. I think I have a ball with buton with only one tab if you can't work out something. Are you sure about your car year, didn't know the ball shifters went that late but guys on here surely know. Maybe earlier shift mechanism?

Ball shift **** was only used from 82-86....87 and up used the square ****.I believe the ball with 2 metal tabs were used in 82,83 and possibly 84.I know my 86 ball shifter only has one notch out on the shift lever
Thanks for the answers.
Yes, I confirm it's a 1987 according to the VIN and confirmed by the 3rd brake light located in the spoiler.
Maybe that part has been replaced with a 86 one in the past, no idea.
Thanks for the offer, will get back to you if I can't find anything local

That's why I wondered about the year. Didn't square ***** lock in place with the staple and there was no need for the groove shown on the OPs shift shaft?
And they also used the plastic shaft with round ***** down the shaft and not the flat one that was able to hold the button clip on the button?

Correct...I was thinking the same thing when I saw the groove at the top of the lever.Someone must have swapped in an earlier style shifter
Looks like my 84s ball shifter
One groove for one c-clip to hold it in place.
But who knows what was left in the parts bins when that car moved up the
assembly line!
