Hi, I am looking to buy a new carpet for my 83 Z28. I have changed interior colors a couple times and I am now going back to black!
I was wondering if there is a difference in the shape of the carpet or possibly something else if I buy one for a 1990 rather than a 1983 carpet?
I'm thinking maybe the color might be different a little from year to year. I do have most of my interior pieces ready for the swap so...is there a benefit to a later year carpet?
I did notice on RockAuto that the part numbers are different.
Thanks for the help!
However, for 1983(82-84), a black interior was not offered. The closest was Charcoal, which I had in my 83 Z28 HO and liked very much. Almost black, but not black; made for a nice contrast with all of the grey-black tones in the interior.
ACC offers a very beautiful Charcoal in its Ultra Plush line, probably one in its standard Cut Pile line, too. When I got new carpet last year, I got several samples from Stock Interiors, one of which was Ultra Plush Charcoal. I didn't go with it, though I kind of wish I had. I chose to stay grey, but, as I noted, with the variety of grey and black tones in all 3rdgen interiors, Charcoal could have worked just as well. And for a Charcoal tone, it was a very nice shade, much nicer than any of their different grey tones, for a grey... if that makes sense to anyone else but me lol.
But, yes, you can order any color, for any year, for any 3rdgen. So if you want to go with 85-92 black in your 83, then go for it. But definitely ask for color samples in both lines: Cut Pile and Ultra Plush. They will be happy to send as many different colors as you want.
I went with an ultra plush with the mass backing and thinks it looks and feels great. Remember to think about your center console (it has carpet), kick trim, or what your doors look like to get something that is going to match though. The colors were different on years, and had different names, etc. So it's best to just decide on what you like since you are changing everything and go with that. But like LA said, most will give you color samples so you can know for sure what your getting.
I dug out the samples I got from Stock Interiors. A line-up of different grey tones can make a picture look black-n-white, but these really are color pictures. You can tell that they're all different, but the dominant undertone of each shade isn't easily apparent in photos, making it difficult to know how each color looks when viewed in person.
From left-to-right, the first two cuttings are the thicker, more "luxurious" Ultra Plush line: #1097 Charcoal(an attractive not-black, due to a somewhat silvery undertone, making it "livelier" than black); #1068 Medium Grey(a greenish undertone, but the closest shade to a 3rdgen grey in the UP line). Continuing left-to-right, the next two cuttings are the standard Cut Pile line: #877 Dove Grey(considered the most appropriate medium grey for 3rdgens, with its silvery-blue undertone, and is the color most people choose); #8078 Dark Grey(with a dark blue undertone, this is the most appropriate dark grey for 3rdgens, and a near-perfect match to my Firebird's factory rear cargo area carpet's dark grey color, which differs from the passenger area carpet's medium grey color, hence, why I've always figured the Firebird color was called Medium Dark Grey).
It fits perfectly fine under the trim. Just be aware of you get mass backing its going to be heavy and hard to get laying flay, its very important to get it all flat before you start trimming

Leave it in the sun for a few hours. It makes a big difference in getting it to lay flat.
That explains it, I did it in the Air Conditioned Garage.... I however was very hot and sweaty doing it. It was daunting but its not so hard if you go slow and be careful with your cuts, small bits at a time
