Chip key ignition switch replacement

My ignition switch will not read the chip in the key, so I found out what resistance was needed and added a resistor so now everything works. I would like to replace the switch itself, I have the factory manuals ( sorry 89 firebird 5..0 TBI automatic ) and I'm finding I understand but a few pictures would be helpful. Are there any youtube videos you guys know of specifically for a gm with the VATS ? Thanks a bunch

I imagine you're talking about the ignition cylinder? Imagine you are since you mentioned adding a resistor, the switch is deeper in the column. There's a bunch of videos on youtube on swapping the cylinder. Its fairly simple, you will need some special column tools, lock plate puller, steering wheel puller, good picks for the lock ring. I personally HATE trying to fish the wire down the column, so I'll unbolt the column and pull the wire sleeve as well as pulling the bowel and switches, turn and wiper. You can put another Vats tumbler in, means a vat key, etc, will need to find your key number so you can get the correct resistor, go online, dealers dont stock all 15 keys, then find some one still willing to cut a vats key. On another note, imagine if you have the vats bypassed by resistor, could probably just put a standard cylinder in there, no need to run the VATS wire in that case.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know about having another VATS key cut, I figured when you ordered the tumbler you gave the spec for the resistance. Do you have any good sources for the key to be made?

Thanks

When you buy the tumbler, it comes with a blank key that is cut to the tumbler with out a resistor, the resistance value is in the VATS module. All the tumbler is doing is measuring the ohm value and communicating that to the module. Far as the key, you need to measure the resistance as you did for the resistor, and match that to one of the 15 key values. You will buy the key that matches that value, 1-15. From there, will have to find a local key cutter (Lock Smith) or GM dealer. Stratec keys are exactly like OEM and GM licenses

This chart will help you match the OHM to the Key Number you need.

I just went through this and finished the repair this morning. I went and bought a new vats ignition cylinder as stated in previous response it came with a no resistor key plus the cut on the key was way different than mine. Gm dealer wanted more than $50 for a vats key and then another $20 to cut it (x2 so I have a spare). So I returned the vats ignition cylinder and installed a small on/off switch and wired it and the correct value resistor inline to the connector that goes to the vats module. I also hid the switch so if it’s not turned on it will keep engine from cranking! Was less expensive and no one can see the modification.
