3rd gen LS1 guys... what front springs you running?

I'm just curious. I've been on alot of boards and never really have heard what guys are using. I was thinking about using stock 3rd gen v6 springs up front for the lightened load. Anyone else? Any ride height pics??

Thanks!

ill shoot some pics of jamex springs with 1/2 a coil cut out.. i figure if 1 1/2" on a stock setup and im taking alot of weight off the front so it should end up about 1 1/2"... and if they dont work ill be cutting up the stock springs on the front...

i think the dropzone ones would work ok with a bit taken out.. that or coil overs

GM has a 3-letter code assigned to each of their springs. CDB is the spring code used on WS6 cars, not as stiff as the IROC pieces and ~100# less rate than the Moog 5662 springs I was running w/ the L98.

Keep in mind that just swapping an LS1 is 150lbs less than an L98 or any other iron motor.

I might be the closest one (without an LS1) as I have taken a lot of weight off my front end.

Hood 35lbs
Heads 50lbs
A/C 25lbs
Baer brakes 20lbs
Headers 15lbs

I run Guldstrand slalom springs cut to lower car 1" (they are stock height from them).

Car sits 1" lower than stock.....

i have eibachs on my car, ls1 isnt in there yet but i figured i put it back together and see how it sits. If its too high i'll just cut half a coil off the fronts.

I have Jamex springs all the way around and as a result of the LS1, my front end is a tad bit higher. I might go and put the stock springs in the rear to even the car out. I wouldn't recommend "lowering" the car w/ the LS1 because of how low the T56 crossmember hangs. I have the one from FBodyMotorsports and it drags on 50% of speedbumps even at a crawl.

You are going in the opposite direction from what I have seen work well. I think V6 springs would give you a decent ride- but I really don't think they will give you the handling you want.

You are stuffing in an LS1 because you want more power. I got it. You want to move faster than the other guy off the line and win. Watch the weight transfer from front to rear- V6 springs weren't made for racing. They were made to get the car along the road with decent handling. You have a world class engine- you need the handling to match otherwise you'll be disappointed.

CASE IN POINT- The new Cobalt has less power than the Neon. The Cobalt handles better than the Neon. However, the Neon accelerates faster on the straights aways. I'd rather have the Cobalt. Power is nothing without the context to put it in.

v6 springs won't weight transfer that well??? Who said I wanted to road race with this car? Its mostly gonna be for straight line racing... and 4th gen guys use v6 springs alot in the rear b/c of weight transfer and I want them up front also for the better ride height with my lightened front end. I might just get TTA springs... they would work really well and I'd have the best of both worlds.

Here mine with stock V6 springs all the way around. I dont think weight transfer is a problem at all, I've ran the car quite a few times and its hooking very well. Other than the Spohn LCA's the suspension is still totally stock V6.

So how does it ride/handle? What struts/shocks you running? New or used springs? If new, how much and what part number?? Sorry for all the questions, that thing looks mean! Sits just right too... looks just like how a factory 3rd gen v8 car sits I might have to cut a coil out of mine if I do them.

thanks!

well got the engine in.. what a load of work... couldnt get the tranny bolted up cause i have to hack up the spohn stuff to make it work, maybe next trip home

im also running a smaller tire.. 245/40/17.. instead of the 245/45 which would fill a bit better.. also i didnt want it super low.. the stance is pretty good in my mind.. pics in the garage dont doer much justice

i also need some bigger spacers for the front wheels.. gambled with 1.5" when i thing 1.75 would be better

It rides decent actually, but I dont run a front sway bar so I know it could get alot better if I put it back on. Also the LCA's invite alot more road noise because of the solid connection. The shocks/struts and springs were on the car when I got it, so I dont have any part #'s, but they are just stock style. The car could be a little lower, this is if you keep all of the A/C, washer bottle, sway bar etc..., all which I didnt put back in so...

Yeah she did get alot meaner looking with the addition of the wheels, kind blew my whole sleeper theme right out the window.

Ace: You car looks awesome man. Keep up the good work and good luck with the rest.

Here is the thread I was talking about. Showing how the car sits. I have some other pictures when I measured the pitch and drip, however I need to find the time to dig them up. Overall the front is somewhere 1/4 lower than stock. I left the stock rear springs in to maintain the correct level.

My mistake- I wasn't aware of your desire to race your 'bird on a regular basis.

I drive my Vette at speeds over 100mph on a regular basis. I wouldn't set her up for drag racing because I don't do it.

But if it floats your boat- go for it. I don't think she'll handle very well on th street. Especially if it is a daily driver. Puddles, uneven pavement, sharp turns- those are all less than ideal for a drag race set up.

Either way- post your times. You have a great car.

Thanks man. I'm not doing a full drag or full road race setup... just the best of both worlds. I'm going to cut a coil off of my stock WS6 springs for now and see how it does. Hopefully it rides, drives handles, and sits about like stock... we'll see. I just want to remove the sway bar at the track and put on slicks and click off low 11's, then put it back on and do some cornering. We'll see. Its coming along nicely, I'll post pics in the LSX forum soon.

later!

my car sits down in the front an 1" since my swap.
iron block aluminum head small block
to
iron block aluminum head 6.0L

motor is for sure got more weight than the ole small block.
might have to find me an ls2 out there. cheaper than replacing the front springs.
