LT1 Swappers.. tranny question for ya
PLEASE READ WHOLE POST BEFORE REPLYING
will a T5 Bell Housing bolt to an LT1 block?
i currently have an aftermarket T56, thirdgen replacement, from McLeod bolted to my L98
it uses all the T5 hydrolics, pedals and the T5 bellhousing, then from then bellhousing it bolts to an adapter plate to the T56, because it uses a Viper Input shaft..
what i want to do.. is swap an LT1 engine in, and still use this trans, because for:
#1 its brand spankin new,
#2 it has a better gearing than the other T56's,
#3 i dont want to use the crappy pull type T56 that comes on 4th gens,, this is a push type, and
#4 and final, because i just want to buy an engine not another trans..
so will the bellhousing bolt up? its basically like a T5 is going in..
yes i searched for over 2 hours and came up with nothing..

Yes, it will bolt right up
Well, it better since a T56 bellhousing bolts up to my small block with no issues LOL

Wouldnt bother with the underhood fuse box or engine bay harness, just the engine harness itself, computer, fans, possibly radiator.

last question... the engine is a 96.. and i know that means OBDII, i thought i read that changing to OBDII sucks.. and to Keep OBDI.
if thats true.. what do i need to do this? is it just a PCM change? or do i change the little black module under the dash as well?
in fact.. do i keep the thirdgen black module or use the LT1?
(black module = under the driver side dash, used to plug in scan tools) i forgot whats its called
and on a side note... is swapping a cam in these engines the same as the old engines? i have an LT4 Hot Cam thats itching to go in.. i didnt know what i have to do with the opti and all that. any suggestions?

The "module" you are referring to is the ALDL port or connector, its the same for thirdgen and OBDI LT1, the connector is different for OBDII

If you downgrade to OBD-I you can leave your existing 3rd gen ALDL connector there, same piece.
If you stay w/ the LT1's OBD-II you'd want to swap in an OBD-II ALDL connector also, the scantool packages out there assume you have this connector.
I'm happy w/ my LS1's OBD-II functionality and I'd say leave yours that way also. You can disable whatever codes you need w/ HPTuners or LS1-Edit. OBD-II makes for much easier diagnosing when things aren't going right.

Hey Don.. i bet you're saying.. "oh no.. " right now hu?..
its not a done deal yet.. the owner is waiting on this other guy that was before me to pay up.. so far its been 3 weeks so it looks good from my end..
i was weighing my options are far as do a buy new heads, base plate, springs for the TPI or go with an LT1.. going the TPI route was just as costly as swapping it out for an LT1... only real pain in the *** i see is wiring, and modifying the passenger clam shell for the A/C compressor. already have fuel lines ready..
so i should go with OBDII? im not sure i can get the ALDL.. ill try

I've had both, and I'll take II any day.
just out of curiousity kevin, why would you pick II over I? I know when II came out everyone hated it because it required more tuning when you modded it, but I know with all of the software that's out now thats not really a problem.

The rest is exactly as you stated. OBD-II is picky and a severely lumpy cam will set cylinder misfire errors. I don't know where the limit on that is though, my 224/224 .563/.563 112 cam doesn't do it.
I really like the extra diagnostics as a troubleshooting tool personally. Just shut down the diagnostics you don't want via HPTuners or whatever.
The truth is that OBD-II doesn't create problems, it helps you identify them.

The main thing would be the HUGE difference when it comes down to software for tuning, LT1 obdII software is $450 just for one pcm, tunercat for LT1 obdI is under $100 even for a registered version, and not locked to any pcm.
OBDII may be nice on your LS1, however we are talking about an LT1, its two very different computers, there are more reasons than the price, however $350 is definetly a good reason.
