I recently returned from the FBody Gathering in Atlanta. Check out the post over in the Engine Swap forum for the "LS1 Swap the hard way"...

This a Camaro with the New Edelbrock/MSD LS1 carb and ignition kit. Looks very sweet!!!!!

holy cow!
thats me.
thanks for the pics!
had a blast this weekend.
i cant believe i didnt get an award, but i just went to hang out and have a good time anyway, so all is good.

id have went EFI, but the car already had a carbed motor in it, os it made the conversion pretty simple in the wiring and fuel dept.

ran 7.3 at 95 1/8 mile and dyno'd 380hp and 418 tq cam only.

Hey Stage.... great car! Between my buddy, my girlfriend and myself, we should have 3 maybe 4 thirdgens there next year.
Did you take over to Dynolab this year? We went by there on saturday, a few guys were putting down some very impressive numbers......

the #'s posted above are from dynolab, hot off the interstate.
if i would have had cool down time, i could have hit a few #'s higher.
im running stock manifolds right now. my next project will be headers and nitrous.

hope to see you next year. the third gens were comming on strong. 1st year ive actually had my car there, and the 1st time ive seen more than 2 third gens at the gathering.

The edelbrock conversion kit is growing on me more and more...........

Tell me stage20, How do u like the carb set up? Roughly how much did it cost? and is it easy to tune N hook up?

I am doing a Ls1 swap myself, but i dont want a hassel with the wiring...But i figure...i spend 700$+ and get the wiring harness mated and whatnot or i spend the 700$ some od price for the kit?

any info, insite on the kit would be appriciated....

Also the car looks Awsome!!

the kit is really plug and play. 4 wires that you actually have to hook up, everything else plugs right in.
i have a GM single plane because i thought it would help with the camshaft, mated with the edeljunk box and it works great.
you can find the kit on ebay now for around 650.
the price of the motor will vary with milage, and what engine you decide to go with.
brand new 5.3's are on ebay for 1400. ive got a lil over 2K in my motor. it was a 10K mile 04 model.

its fun, i love it.
no valves to adjust, timing to set, or plug wires to confuse.

I thinking of swapping a 6.0 into my 91, but sticking with the efi, and replacing the truck intake with an LS6 manifold and putting a healthy cam in it Hey stage, what size futral cam did you go with to get the #'s from the dyno? Those are awesome #'s, especially considering thats through the stock manifolds!!! I know longtubes really wake up gen III motors, I would guess you will be way over 400 rwhp with longtubes!

its only 599 602 lift. small cam to me, but a big cam to the daily drivers.
mine is just a toy, its not my regular vehicle.
im prolly going to get real agressive with the cam if i do heads.
im having fun with it like it is.
ive had a nitrous kit forever, i might throw it on and see how far it gets me.

235 237. if its a stock motor, you need to make sure the cam grinder is fimiliar with ls1's to keep your pistons and valves happy with each other.

this cam was ground for stock heads, stock manifolds, and a big converter in mind.
this cam may not net you the same results. futral custom ground it for me, per allen's specs.

id recommend their products. took a bit to get them, but allen is the man when it comes to guessing camshafts.

Cool, thanks for the advice BTW, I'll be in p'cola this sat to help a buddy of mine who is getting out of the navy move back to KS. He is in the middle of swapping an LS1 into a 97 SS. He says its more difficult than it sounds... But we have to tow it back to KS behind the U-haul

that swap will be sweet when done, but i hear you gotta change a lot of stuff, which im sure you have already found.

if the weather is half way clear, all us f bodys hang out at the burger king at 9 mile(hwy 90) and chemstrand rd.
if you are your friend are fimiliar with it, stop by if you have the time.
there are usually 100 cars or so on a normal night, 10-15 of those are 4th gens, then a few here and there older f bods.

Cool, I'll be getting into p'cola late tommorrow evening, I will try to swing by
I have been researching the gen III swap for a while now, so I'm pretty sure I know what all is involved, but i guess there is only one way to find out for sure. I was planning on an LS1, but then I discovered how cheap I can get an 01 and up LQ4 compared to an LS1, and how much power potential they had and decided to go that route. Your car reassured me of my decision thanks

Awesome looking setup and very clean.

I think I'm going to do this setup on mine, but probably with a 408 iron block, some ported heads and a healthy cam. I was curious what kind of fuel pressure you were running?

I don't have a ton of experience with carbs but my father does. How is the idle quality with the carb and the bigger cam? Driveability? I'm not going to drive my car everyday but I'd like to take it to work and downtown ocassionally to hang out (30-40 mile round trip) but mostly for fun and the track.

Thanks
Mike

drivability depends on the cam. you dont have a computer to fake and make it idle good, so it all depends on how good you are with the carb.
i drive the heck out of mine.
last friday to mobile (170 mile trip for me) raced it, and drove it back home.
weekened before that drove it 220 miles round trip.
i drive it every weekend when its clear. so much fun to drive.
BTW, 6psi fuel pressure if suffice for the current setup.

Awesome, thank you. Like I said, I don't have a ton of experience with carbs but I have a father and friends who do, so I shouldn't have too much of a problem.

Thanks again.

from what ive found with an ls1, it kills plugs.
you have to be super lean on the idle and cruise circuit, or it will pop and bang and backfire.
these things dont like fuel, unless at WOT.
i have a holley hp with screw in air bleeds for all 4 corners.
ive had the wideband on it playing with things and i got it perfect, but it doesnt like to cold start now. any fatter and it fouls plugs.
trying to get it 13.0-13.3 idle, 15.0-~ cruise and its dead on 12.5 WOT.
before the idle was 12.5, which is lean at idle for a cam with large overlap, but the ls1 hates it.
if it aint in the 13's, its gonna foul plugs.
good luck.
