LT1 Swap
I am about to start my LT1 swap in my 1987 IROC-Z. I am in the process of getting all the materials i need and have a few questions that I havent seen on the boards.
Here are my specs:
1997 LT1 (Have)
1993 Painless Wiring harness (Getting)
1993 Computer (Getting)
1993 Reprogramed Prom (Getting)
The reason for the 93 stuff is because Painless Wiring told me that inorder for me to run the 700R4 I had to use the older 93 computer and harness. I just have to get a Speed Density sensor and put where the airfilter is.
Questions:
1) Can i get rid of the smog equipment?
2) Can I run long tube headers?
3) Can I run true duel exaust with no cats.
I know I can do these things on TPI and Carberated cars, but i dont know about this new computer stuff and if it will allow me without throwing a code or codes and making the motor run like crap? I know these cars got these 02 sensors and other sensors and I wanna know if there are ways I can get around them without making the motor run like crap, but still be able to get rid of the smog equipment and run the long tube headers with true duel exhaust. Thanks for all your help.

If your running a 93 setup you wont be able to just "have it reprogrammed" you'll need a new chip burned. I strongly suggest you see about getting a used 4L60E and run a 94-95 setup, i've done the 700R4 deal, 4L60E, and T56 in thirdgens. The 4L60E is a much nicer deal around town, take a look at the shift table adjustment capability in the tuning software a little and you'll start to see what I mean, also for the price you'll pay to get that "painless" harness, you could buy a good used auto harness, and 4L60E if you try hard.

You have suggested a very interesting idea and I am seriously thinking about going that direction.
What I Have:
97 LT1
What I Need:
4L60E
97 Computer?
Fuel Lines
Power Steering Lines
A/C Stuff(Dont know if i will do AC)
I see that you (Z28*****) sell Fuel lines and the power steering lines. So i will most likely try and get them from you.
Now with that tranny i recall hearing that I have to fab something up to make the tranny work or something with the bolt . Is this true? If so what exactly is it?
About the harness, dont you think that it would be easier to get it from painless? Im just worried about splicing things and it not working. I understand wiring diagrams and wiring in general, but Im concerned about not being able to complete it because of improper wiring and blowing the computer or motor. Advise is greatly needed. Thanks for everybodies help so far.

You'll want a 94-95 PCM, the wiring from painless, unless you get the extra long one, its pretty much a stock one with the connectors cut off and the wires labeled.

I am curious, I can get a 4L60 for $350 and i was wondering if it will work with a 94-95 computer. If so should i go with it?

You can also go with a 94+ PCM and run your stock 700. You will need a throttle body off of a 93 to hook up to the TV cable of the 700, or someone makes some kind of kit to do the same thing.
You can flash the 94+ pcm so it doesn't look for the 4l60E I'm pretty sure, or just get a computer from a manual trans car.
I would recomend 94+ because of the ability to flash the prom. I have a 93 and just bought all the chip burning crap.

Thank you all for everyone's help. I personally like to see what all i need to do before I start a project and ya'll have helped me out greatly. Hopefully very soon I will be able to start the LT1 swap in my Iroc-Z. It should be a fun task, lol. Naw, I love working on cars so I know this will be kinda fun for me, well.....driving it after I'm complete will be the fun part.
Also Im just curious I can flash the codes with the scanner from summit right? Hypertec, or whatever brand i want. Im just wanting to get rid of the smog and, well you know what I want to do. Just curious if that is all i need to flash the codes with and be able to run with what i want. Thanks again.

no, a Hypertech programmer will not do what you need. If you want to do it yourself you'll need to get a cable to connect a laptop to the ALDL connector and the software, Tunercat or LT1Edit, to program it. You can also send your PCM to Ion at www.madz28.com and he can do what you want.

If you're going to use a 94+ PCM you can use a laptop and program such as tunercat, LT1edit or PCM4less to do it with and a cable to plug into the diag socket.

Where would I find these program such as tunercat or LT1edit. I think I remember running across a website that you could download something like this off of. I cannot remember what site it is. Do ya'll? Thanks for your help. Also, I am new to all of this computer stuff, so i was curious what the hypertec scanner does? Thanks again.

BDB - try www.tunercat.com or www.lt1edit.com
The software isn't free, but there are ways around that I won't get into. The Hypertech programmer is basically a piggy-back PCM. It allows you to change minor things such as shift points on an auto, fan temperature control points, speedo calibration for new gears/tires, things like that. It will not however let you change anything having to do with smog or security controls. Thread
