Well they're pretty ****y, but I get the idea...

One question, how hard is it driving a 6-speed and living next to 'Stahl' road??

Looks good. Is that more the long-tubes or you exhaust giving you that raspy sound?

Stahl drive?? hahahaha My buddy used to live on that street and had a H/C blown LS1 6-SPEED T/A... I actually have his old 9" in my car. Kinda funny.

Anyways, I have the SW Hawk's LT's with custom off road y and a stock WS6 catback (4th gen LS1). All the rasp is b/c I have a electric 3" cutout in the I-pipe right under the right rear passenger seat.

There we go, see how that works... much better than my ****ty vids from yesterday. I was at my parent's today celebrating my birthday so I had my cousin get some good footage of me with my brother-in-law riding shotgun. Turned out decent. First part of the video is me leaving and just annihilating the tires trying to feather the throttle in 1st, then me coming back at the camera... nailed it from a 15mph roll, somewhat blew them off in 1st, then into 2nd, finally hit 3rd and went flying by about 80-90mph, then coming back again and linelocked the bitch and I ended up hitting the rev limiter before the 1-2 shift, and finally me pulling back in the driveway... notice the hot 315 BFG DR's picking up the rocks. That's it for now, I'm gonna let the car rest for awhile.

 

MUAH!!!! Thats mint dude! I love that sound I gotta get me one of them cut outs whoot!!!

More like the LS1 itself They're not exactly the best sounding engine as it is. Pretty raspy. LT's just make them more so.

True, LSX motors are raspy SOBs, but maybe they are the best sounding SBC's

Funny you say that, when I had my old 305TPI/6spd combo in the car, (yes 305, NOT 355) I had Edelbrock TES shorties on it, gutted cat, and 3" back to a flowmaster with a 3" cutout at the rear. I got tons of compliments from all the local LS1 guys in our club... "man, that's the best sounding 305 I've ever heard" was always the comment

 

Small displacement V8's sound great IMO. Just look at 5.0 Stangs. Bigger cubes sound meaner (Louder) but small 8's have that pop that just sounds so precise.

 

I'd say cubic inches has a lot to do with the sounds, but firing order plays just as important of a role. I wonder why the LS1 is so raspy? I've always wondered... is the firing order different? I know it's horrible but I can't remember.... and I even built mine

 

As a matter of fact the firing order is different on the LS1 compared to traditional sbc's. Cant recal off the top of my head what the firing order is though. Besides completely symetrical exhaust ports are gonna change it up quite a bit too. Probabaly more to do with the rasp than anything else. Look at tires as an example. Old tires had a symetrical tread design and made noise like crazy. newer tread designs have varibal pitch and the sounds dont harmonize so much less overall noise.

 

LS1 Firing Order 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3

SBC Firing Order 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

Just thought I'd find them and stick them in there for you guys.

 

Yep, that's right... just looked it up myself. That firing order is totally different... well halfway different. LOL That has to make them sound alot different.

*If you draw a overhead view of a v8 and right down cylinders 1-8 in their correct spots, its interesting to look at how the LS1 and SBC compare when firing... the LS1 does a criss cross firing going 1-8-7-2 where the SBC goes diagonal 1-8, but then jumps oddly up front to the 4-3 firing which are both the 2nd front cylinders... interesting.

that is odd, someone chime in here as to why, I know someone knows the answser, but I sure as heck dont. I guess I should probably learn since i do plan on dropping an LS1 into my car eventually.

 

Why what? Why the firing order is different?? Maybe more power, smoother operation, I'm not sure....

 

i was talking about the firing pattern, why it was different and what resulted. im sure thats why the sound is different, but how much power would that add if any?

 

Just like I said, it could make more power... smoother operation freeing up power maybe? They make cams for SBC's that swap the firing order around... I think they swap the #4 and #7 cylinders... they make pretty good power I believe. Someone else jump in here...

I was just wondering how much your swap cost and did you do it yourself or did you have a shop do it

 

I did it all my self... pretty much everything. I had a friend help with the wiring/tune, other than that it was all me. As for a price,I still haven't sat down and added it up, but I'd say $5k or less even with all my mods because I parted out a 4th gen and made most my money back

 

i was thinking about doing the swap since im about to have a job making over a thousand dollars a week and i have no bills, but i dont know anything about wiring and modifying. But i figured i might as well buy a 4th gen with a ls1 even though i love the lookes of my 3rd gen.

 

companion cylinders.....when cylinder #1 is on power stroke theres another cylinder on intake stroke. Same as the ford 5.0 and 5.0 HO motors. They switched the cam around making it a different firing order

 

i looked on hawks and they have a 3rd gen ls1 swap section is everything on that page pretty much what you need to do besides the actual motor and tranny and computer

Stock 4th gen WS6 catback.... sounds pretty good, no vids of it though.
