What i did (i still think this is the way to do it): paint engine bay with as much stuff gone as possible. Drill hole for wiring harness. Drop motor in. Run wiring.

if you mean paint the car, i'd do that last. lowering a motor in, and all that mechanical work gets you and your coverall buttons scratching a new paint job... I'd rather not have to pussyfoot around while doing the mechanical stuff, due to a fancy nice paint job.

I did it this way and would recommend doing it that way. Unless you want to spend twice as long masking everything off. Strip it totally down and paint anything that needs paint seperately and put it back together. Turns out looking better IMHO.

Good luck on your swap.

if i were painting my engine bay id do the swap first and make sure everything worked right and then taken it all out and painted the bay.

That would be too much work and a waste of time as well. Paint it now and get that out the way then do the swap. LOL j/k

We're stripping and painting the car inside and out first...once thats done were going to drop the motor in and start on suspension/brakes...

Imo, its alot nicer aswell as easier to work on a clean car.

Your almost there. I left only the steering shaft and the brake booster. I masked the booster and painted the shaft. If you can, get a power washer and some good degreaser and go to town on it. If you cant get a power washer, you will have to degrease it some how. The washer just makes it alot easier.

Mine looked just like yours before paint, heres an after shot.
