It's alive! BUT oh crap whats that noise?!

Ok so i started my car for the first time today with the LT1 in it and it sounds as though it has a thrown rod(VERY pronounced metal on metal clang, hard to tell which side of the motor it is coming from). I double checked and there are no holes in the block. However there are a few places where the headers run VERY close to the frame. Is it possible the noise is the headers hitting the frame? And is there an easy way to get a peek into the crankcase too see if it is a rod?

OK this morning the noise has toned down to a regular knock, and i have a little found moisture(what i belive to be gasoline, but seems watery) in the intake. here is a video to demonstrate the noise:

I know the wires are not very good so i am going to try and puta set on to see if i am getting some cross fireing.

Do you have an A/C compressor? Is it hitting the frame? Also check headers near the frame. I have actually heard exhaust leaks that sounded like that.

No A/C compressor, and using the screw driver trick i can hear a definate knock, but it is not very pronounced on the cylinder heads.

Sorry to hear that. Probably a rod or main knock then.

Sounds like it's missing really bad also, I would first check to see if all of the injectors are firing and you have spark as well.

Ok Lesson one NEVER trust anything on an engine you buy, they had #5 and #3 spark plugs backwards on the distributor. So that fixed the horrible miss.
I did some more checking and the knock is most noticalbe on the fuel rail?
I have a Datamaster log of it running if that can help anybody help me.
Not sure on the oil pressure... I don't have a test gauge and the idiot light doesn't seem to work.

So the miss is gone but still knocking? The knock sounds like a rod to me but thats merely a guess you never know until you tear it apart.

Assuming you have oil pressure the first thing I would do is pull the rocker covers off and see if anythings broken. First visual on the parts and then crank it over and make sure all the valves are opening. If all of that looks good then the only top end issue I can think of you wont see by doing this is a collapsed lifter. If you dont find anything by doing this I hate to say it bud but your gonna have to pull the engine and tear it apart.

I still here the noise, but in reviewing the datamaster log the computer did count any knocks after startup. alough while idleing it is pulling out alot of timing (upto 15, the max) to the point where the engine barely runs and eventualy dies.

Put the datamaster file in a zip file and attach it here. Maybe something obvious will be seen in the datamaster log.

Well thanks for all the help guys but i was talking with my buddy who runs a mustang shop and we found out that it was pulling spark out because the IAC was maxed and it couldn't bring the idle down. Which was mostly due to how i have it together right now while i wait for the new throttle body to get here, look closely at the video and you'll see what i mean.

What was wrong with your throttle body?

Exactly, just try taking the IAC off and cleaning it with throttle body/fuel injection cleaner.

And which way is it maxed out, fully open or fully closed? If its trying to close then you might have a vacuum leak.

The throttle body has no throttle blades in it. so i made a block off plate to allow the engine to idle (while i wait for the new TB to get here), but i didn't allow for the air that would leak past the throttle blades so i drilled a small hole in the plate and the IAC went back to a more normal state, also i found that my MAP sensor is failling.

Why are you missing the throttle blades? You should also replace the grommet the MAP sensor rests on.

ok so who wants to play geuss what the metal clanging was?.......
the powersteering cooler line was loose and it was hitting the lower radiator support..... lol
As for the rough idle it was going into alow coolant protect mode of some sort and retarding all the timing out.....
Now she purrrrrs like a kitten.... an evil kitten....
A BIG thanks to every one for their input!

Ahhh the little things... No matter how careful you are something like that is always there to get your heart rate up.

I would have never guessed it was something tapping that was making that noise. It definetly sounded rotational... Post up a vid of how it sounds now!

Nice and quiet now! Good job man! Also, good thinking on making that plate for the TB just to get it running and work out bugs. I probably wouldnt have thought of that...

Good luck on the rest of the project!
