I am installing a LS3 in my 1990 camaro which will be controlled by a 2000 pcm and harness. The throttle is a holley 90mm, can anyone give me first hand advice on which cruise control module to use? I have read that some people recommend using the 94 and newer truck unit, s10 4.3 unit, 99-02-body unit and the caprice unit. I am planning on using the 99-2002 f-body unit and mount it where the stock cruise was located, does anyone have a better idea?

 

if you use the 1999-up ecm then yes you can use the 1999-up f-body cruise box. the 1998 is setup like the trucks and does not use the ecm signals to enable it or turn it off


here is a picture how I installed it. I cut the 1998-up f-body bracket and welded some metal to make it fit in the stock 89 tpi location

 

I hope you realize you have to change the reluctor ring to run that engine with that PCM

 

I am switching to a 4.1" stroke crank w/ the 24 tooth.

Did you have any extra cable, I was hoping to mount it in the stock camaro location. Any idea why people recommend the other units instad of just using the f-body unit?

 

yes, it's hard to tell in the picture but it has a couple well three large (not sharp) bends.

it bends around the shock and back up the firewall and then back down to the TB. if the camaro location is at the battery tray? then you should be fine. I know I rested it on the batt several times while I fitted the bracket and still had some slack.



the truck units are just one less wire to hook up. they are more of a stand alone. (no pcm signal needed to make it work) and are easy to find dirt cheap

 

Dont forget...you can hide those cruise boxes wherever you want. I know the f-body unit has a super long cable for it. Mine goes from up front by the rad support, all the way around behind the brake booster, around the back of the engin, then a big loop around to the TB.

You can mount it completely out of sight, and bring the cable through a hole or even make a hole for it if you need to. You can disconnect the cable from inside the unit, and it will pass through a smaller hole than the end with the plastic holder.

I havent wired mine up yet, but none of them seem hard to wire.

I was not sure at the time but later found out it is quiet enough to put under the dash. infact the hole in the firewall for the 3rdgen cruise wires go through work fine. (the harness is located under the master cyl. and follows the frame rail.)

 

Crap...I never even thought of that...!!! That would make it so darn simple to hook up. Wouldnt even need to run anywires outside the car. Would also reduce the amount of looping needed to shorten up the cable some.

Where did you mount the unit?? Any pics of how/where you put it?

Im definetly lookin into this during my next "build". I want to hook the cruise up finally in the new car.

I really wanted to mount it under the dash but I thought at the time it would make some stupid buzz noise that would be loud. well after I had mounted it next to the washer jug. and ran wires I noticed the thing hardely made any noise at all while I was testing it.

I belive under the dash with the foam from the panels you would be hard pressed to hear it at all with the windows up and the radio off

 

I have a 1998 cruise module from a Trans Am, is it true the 98 modules are stand alone and dont need an input from the ECU? Can I wire it into my original cruise wiring and use my stock cruise controls on my turn signal switch?
