LQ4 Build
So I just got my hands on a free LQ4 block. I'm not sure what year it came from but it has GM 317 heads with it. I was wondering if I can go and buy new LS2 internals (crank, pistons, rods) to get this to a short block so I can start putting the rest together. Most of the parts got thrown away because some idiot was cleaning the shop and didn't know any better. Also if that works then what all parts could I look at using for the rest of the build. I was thinking Z06 heads and a F.A.S.T. LS6 intake.

If memory serves, the LQ4 & the LS2 are basically the same block, just made from different materials. I'm not too familiar w/ the LS2, so take this w/ a grain of salt - but I think that the LS2 crank will work, pretty confident that the rods will work, & I believe that the pistons will also... Good job grabbing the free block!

you can use ls2 internalls. Top it off with L92 Heads and a L76 Intake! Lots of flow!

I was thinking more along the lines of LQ4 block, LS2 internals, F.A.S.T. intake, and AFR 205 Heads. I know it's a little more expensive but with the right cam this should see some really reliable power. I was just confused on which internals to use. Anyone know where I can get a kit with everything I need (pistons, rods, crank, bearings, etc...) to get this project going?

If you use a LS2 crank, you must use an LS2 cam & LS2 wiring/computer.
The LS2 is a 58x crank, LS1 is 24x (Or vice versa, cant remember exactly)
LS1 & LS2 cranks are identical apart from the reluctor wheel, so you might as well use a LS1 crank, and use a LS2 Pistons/rods.

I will also be using the AFR heads you arer... the 205 lsx part # 1510 with the spring upgrade part # 8605
I am as of yet undecided on what pistons, connecting rods and crank that I want to use.
I was also looking at the FAST 102mm intake... probly use the MSD 6AL with rev control for my ignition needs.

If you are on a budget, the 317 heads will do just fine. They are virtually the same flow as LS6 heads. Also I am pretty sure the LS2 and LQ4 internals are the same.
Good snag on the free block though!

Dont know how active this thread is but I called Comp Cams today for a good power stick that was mild enough to have my LQ4 build be reliable for 2+ years and they gave me this cam as a potential candidate...

That's a lot of money for just a cam, in my opinion.
This cam has similar specs, it's a Texas Speed cam (228/228, .588/.588 112LSA), and it's $375.
To the original poster...how nasty do you want the car to be? Do you want it to drive like a stock car, or have a choppy idle, or? That is very important when looking at what cam to buy, as well as valve springs and such.

you could get a set of cnc'd L92 heads that would outflow the AFR's and cost you about half as much. then use the L76 or LS3 intake.

gm sells a single plane for L92 heads, it is cheap. check gmpartsdirect.
i would find lq9 internals. odds are they will be cheaper than "ls2" internals and will accomplish the same thing. with regard to power, the cranks will take the same, but be sure to get the right reluctor wheel for whatever ecu you buy.
or you could buy a set of stock lq4 internals and make up the compression in the heads. afr can mill those heads to whatever chamber you want (reasonably), basically. i would get ahold of thunder racing or texas-speed and have them custom spec a cam for an L92 head. when it's said and done it will cost the same and be much more tailored for your needs. the reps are comp are idiots with regard to cam choice. they recommended the same cam to me for 3 different engines..funny that it's the same cam they recommended to you hahaha.
