alt and gauge not working

So I put an LT1 in my 89 bird and I keep burning up alternators. The tack only works when the turn signal or brake are on. I know there should be a resistor on the red wire that goes to the alternator, what size should it be and where can I find one?
Thanks for the help

I couldn't get that method to work with my alternator when I did my LT1 swap and kept burning up alternators too. What did finally work was I connected a 12V when ign is on to the F terminal of the alternator. That should fix your problem as it did with mine.

I have it on the L terminal on a 12v switched now, where did you get a connector that goes to the F terminal? Does it stay a one wire or go to a two?

Re: alt and gauge not working

It's still a 1 wire, you just connect it to a different terminal on the plug. Look at the plug and it should have more than one terminal on it; just switch it to F. F = field. L = light, that would mean that if you connect it to F you're energizing the field, and L would be if you wanted a little light to come on (dummy light situation) if the alternator failed.
