LT1/TBI Swap?
I have a spare LT1 motor, I am going to try and put it in my RS. I want to keep it TBI, I have a gmpp carbed intake and tbi adapter. I also want to use the brakets off the 305 TBI motor. I will be upgrading the TB to a larger unit.
I was just wondering if anyone has used the stock accy. brackets?
My main concern I see is the upper radiator hose will need to be modiffied by either and adj water pump neck, so I can route it threw the belts. Looks like I can bypass the water pump and run a shorter belt.
Just trying to get any ideas before I start to mock up the accy.

I don't understand why anyone would swap on carb or any other induction system on and LT1 that comes with a perfectly fine system from the factory.

Re: LT1/TBI Swap?
I was just wanting to keep it very simple. I won't have to mess with any wiring. Plus I like what I have done with the TBI so far. I just need more motor to make more power.
I also look at it this way if I put the LT1 fuel inj. setup on it and run in the 11's no big deal. If it keep it TBI and run 11's well thats doing something diffrent that not many people do.
BTW I have a 95 TA that runs the #'s I want for now. This is just somthing to toy with. I have went 12.49 in the RS (150 shot) I want to hit the 11's with it.

Since the LT1 runs Opti and TBI old-fashioned distributor, I don't see how you're going to get around rewiring. Maybe more than a complete LT1 swap.
The rewards for being different are typically more $'s and a slower car.

Re: LT1/TBI Swap?
Keeping the LT1's stock intake would be far cheaper & easier than trying to adapt the TBI setup to it.

Re: LT1/TBI Swap?
I can run my stock distributor. The carbed intake has the hole in the back.
BTW I will take that old fasion distributor over the opti any day.

No big deal but its something extra

The opti is superior to the standard distributor in nearly every way
Besides, you will have to leave it in there even when you mount a conventional dist
Dont bother bringing up the moisture weakness, your standard dist module is even more susceptible to water than the opti

[QUOTE=Pocket;3888944]True, but your carb manifold will not have a LT1 bolt pattern and is standard SBC coolant routing

I have a carbed intake for a LT1. It's made for an LT1 motor.
Wow you don't even own a LT1 and your an expert on them. I have been messing with LT1's for over 8 years now. I know how much a a pain the optis are. They can cause all kinds of rpm related problems, some are good most are bad. Yes they were a good idea but when put in the real world they are very hit and miss.
I guess I am just an moron for wanting to do things diffrent than you guys on here so mod can just lock this thread and I will do what I want and get the info I need else where.
BTW I won't have to leave it in there. You can block off the hole for the opti.

Re: LT1/TBI Swap?
One of the main probs with trying to run that fast with a TBI is that the TBI doesn't respond well to performance cams. It needs a high amount of vacuum to function properly.
If you insist on the TBI, get one from a Big Block truck. It will bolt straight to a 4bbl intake, has larger injectors, and flows more air.

Did you notice that there is a $99 core charge? Plus it doesnt come with the mounting base or the injectors...

You obviously don't fit that description, as you've at least thought through most of it. I may not agree with what you're doing, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. It's your car, do as you wish. If it was my car (and I came very close to doing an LT1/T56 swap), I'd keep the LT1 induction/ignition/controls.

Re: LT1/TBI Swap?
I know there is a core charge. I am not sure if I am going with that one yet or not.
This is just want I want to do for now, with what I have laying around mostly. I couldn't see me spending more than 5-800 bucks on this swap as I already have most of my parts. I need a new cam and springs and will be going with an electric wp too. I got the intake for 125 bucks with the adapter. I have went faster than 95% of the guys running the stock heads & TB.
Here is a pic of the car in question. It's not some pile a crap I got off my uncle. I have put alot of time into it.

And a video of my best Pass.

Re: LT1/TBI Swap?
The intake, water pump, reverse flow heads, and opti are what makes the LT1 special. What's the point in putting all the time and money into an LT1 swap, if in the end, all you end up with is a stock roller motor with an electric water pump, reverse flow heads, and an inferior designed injection system?
If nothing else, a carb and HEI distributer will definately outperform the TBI setup.
