LS1 short block value?
Guys,
I can pick up an LS1 short block dirt cheap. I PM'd the seller about the motor and here is the info I am armed with...
"I found an old post where you stated you has an ls (1 or 6?) shortblock in your dads garage that was in a fire? Do you still have it and are willing to let it go for $100..i can pick it up. Stock bore, crank and rods correct?
John"
"I do still have it. For $100 picked up it's yours. Yes it's all stock, it's an LS6 block."
"Why was it pulled? Any major damage that would not be fixed in a basic ring and bearing rebuild?
John"
"My original motor in the GTO broke the timing chain so I bought this one off a guy that was going to a forged setup since he was planning to spray a big shot. His 04 GTO had like 2k miles or something realy low like that, I pad $1700 for the whole longblock setup and I was just going to drop it on my car. In the meantime I bought a magnacharger and a forged L92 stroker. The GTO engine sat in my father's garage until the garage burned. I pulled the heads and saw that a little water had gotten into the cylinders and rusted so it will need be bored or honed a little and it need to be cleaned - it is dirty from soot. It didn't get hot in the fire."
Is this worth the money? No plans for sure but maybe I will build it and put it in the camaro down the road. Or may look into another car to use it in (really want another T/A). If I were to get it I would like to just get it honed (hopefully that will clean the cylinders up) and reuse the stock rotating assembly. New rings, bearings, and rod bolts (I seem to find they are seriously weak in the LS1). Basic budget rebuild. Would I need to rebalance as all I am changing is the rod bolts?
I plan to go look at it before I commit to buying. Just wanted to get some others take on it for the money.

i'd say they go for $900-1500 in good shape for a longblock, for $100 you really can't go wrong though IMO.

You know, it sounds like this guy knows a lot about LSx engines.
If they are worth so much then I'd ask myself why this guy is giving it away so cheap....unless he knows it's bad.

Re: LS1 short block value?
I pick it up friday night. He has agreed to let me take it to my machinist I work with on my motors and let him see if a small hone will clean it up so I can reuse stock pistons. If it will I pay for it, if not I am out a few bucks in gas money and I drop it back off. Can't see how I can go wrong.
