Re: almost there......
i'm "hoping" to fit that motor and a 14x3 air filter under my 4" cowl, but if that spacer needs to get milled down from a 2" to a 1" I won't be too upset.
Ya had to drill/tap the hole for the alternator since iron block motors don't have that, there goes another hour. Then tossed the front cover on after clearancing for the double roller timing chain. Water pump is on, and had to drill/tap the intake for a vacuum fitting so I can run a MAP sensor with my msd 6010 box, since the super victor doesn't come tapped from edelbrock. I find that interesting since the vic jr did and the super vic is another $150ish more. Tomorrow I'm hoping to drill out a few holes a little larger on my ultra bell th400 then put on the sfi flexplate and maybe toss it all into the camaro again. Unless I hit up the dragstrip instead tomorrow evening to help tune a friends car.

Re: almost there......
well after 5 hours it's official I got all three converter bolts installed. Putting 7/16" grade 8 bolts where the factory only made room for 10mm bolts with small heads utilizing a f-body oil pan was an absolute blast. "Almost" made me want to pull the pan and just pay for a dry sump after that aggravation on my back. Did grab a few pics of it from thirdgenfest where I tossed the motor in the night before. Now it's 95% ready to fire up, just little stuff here and there.

I'll have updated pics in a week when I finally get some time off work to make more progress, also the engine bay is no where near as messy looking as in that pic, nothing was hooked up to the motor at all so everything was just laying out of the way so I could trailer it that day.

Re: almost there......
After 20 seconds of cranking and dumping a few ounces of 110 down the carb I was finally able to hear the motor pop off with a "slight lope"
for around 5 seconds open headers. Another week of actually buttoning things up and I should have it back on the ground. For now it's just topping off fluids and still have to build the true dual exhaust. Idle rpm fluctuated about 300-400 rpm at idle, I think I might have to back off the map timing if it's bouncing around too much, but won't know that until I have exhaust so I can run it longer and hook up the laptop to the MSD box inside the car. Motor took a few seconds to make oil pressure but shot to 50psi almost immediately. Cranking the motor after the initial fire up also resulted in oil pressure being made.
Overall I'm pretty happy.

it's getting there slowly....
Re: almost there......
what kind of master cylinder set up do you have. even though i love fuel injection and i am carbed not that is a sweet build.
and i dont care if it is for 3 seconds. to hear it come alive is-well--priceless.

Re: almost there......
strange master cylinder and a jakesz28 adapter plate to mount it. The cam in this motor I don't know if EFI would run it without hours and hours of tuning, I can get away with a lot more on a carb setup without trying to hard.
Re: almost there......
oh yeah. carbs are a lot more lenient than a pcm. trust me. i have had hp tuners and i bet over 100 hours of tuning a nitrous injected 5.3. unless you are dedicated to tuning relentlesly then a carb is the way. i loved the tuning aspect so it was cool. i like the master cylinder idea. i really want to go manual steering and brakes but i dont think my wife would like that.

Any updates on this? Looks awesome!
How do you like it with manual steering? Would look cleaner and be alot cheaper.

no updates at the moment, have another weeks worth of working on someone else's drag car then I'll be back wrenching on mine. Manual steering is fine except during low speed tight turns, but I have a spool too, so they both are a bit of a pain during parking lot driving, but out on the road you can't tell the difference at all IMO.

I'm running the MSD 6010 box if you PM me your number I can give you a call, probably easier over the phone to help trouble shoot it.
The guys sbc mustang finally left, one of the first EFI cars I actually like. Running a big stuff 3 on there, what a pain all those wires are to run compared to my carbs

Yea, the MSD setup on these is just a straight up delight. I cannot believe anyone uses the edelbrock version.

Re: almost there......
Again....PM me if you want help, or call MSD tech line and talk to them about it. If you're not running 10 gauge wire off a relay directly to both the battery ground and positive then you'll have an issue as well. They both should be on the battery posts not anywhere else. If he opens the software while cranking it will show crank rpm, if it doesn't then there is a bad sensor on the engine. You need 250rpm IIRC on cranking to get it to fire. Try spinning the motor over then flipping the ignition if you have your tables all screwed up. Mine fires up in under a second and isn't a mild combo.

my msd instructions say that the main cause of no spark is an issue with the crank sensor. is yours working?

Re: almost there......
still no PM.
going to fabricate most of the exhaust this week and then re-do my timing curve, thinking at idle I'll have to pull some map timing and add it into the base timing since the vacuum fluctuations at idle are causing the timing to climb up and down causing the motor to hunt rpm more than necessary. Still have to swap out my defective strange master cylinder and hook up a new shifter cable and run a bunch of wiring and I'll be all set then. Finally stepping up to a nitrous bottle warmer as well, sure beats lugging around this tank I had built that heats the bottles up submerged in water. Just have to run the warmer with the tow vehicle running and charging the battery in the camaro in between racing it.

Man, i just have not found a reason to run a MAP on mine, it runs great as it and the fuel economy is awesome, now when i boost the TA with a LS, then of course i will.

It has benefits for cleaning up part throttle a/f ratio and better fuel economy. I'll figure it out once I drive this thing. Need new antique plates and finish building my exhaust before I can run it too long without my neighbors calling the cops for "noise".

Try spending the money for a custom ground cam, sure it's worth it, but i think the weight savings alone out of my wallet will make the car run faster

Man, i need to remove the here and there stuff but i am nervous, like the front and rear bumper, dont know if i should since it is a street car, or at least swiss cheese the bumpers and i know the door bars could save weight.

well just finished the 3" true dual exhaust and decided to fire up the motor again, takes a ton of fuel dumped down the intake to pop off, but had it running now with a wideband around 14.1:1 at idle @ 1100 rpm. Now the whole house stinks of 110/93 octane mix, so I'm done for the night. Got a long day tomorrow of dyno'ing a sbc mustang I built so I won't touch this again for a few nights. Glad to finally hear it through the exhaust sounds much milder.

Got a local track rental on november 6th for 8 hours, so let's hope. It's always -DA on these late fall track days. Also the motor makes a strange sound when cranking every second or so, can't place my finger on it yet, but fires up and holds 60psi no problem at cold idle.....guess we'll see when I can run it longer shortly.
