Head Gasket for AFR's

Hey guys I wanted to throw this one out there...... I know that AFR recommends a particular head gasket and then there is many others out there that are even better.......

But I already have Felpro 1094's that I was gonna use on a different set of heads before I bought the AFR's...... Do you guys think that I could run them?

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...4&autoview=sku

I wanted to run the 1094's because they have a compressed thickness of .015" My block is stock so the deck height is .025" + the 1094's .015" =.040" quench

"Fel-Pro performance head gaskets feature a PermaTorque/blue gasket body with a solid-steel core to minimize torque loss and gasket blowout. Fel-Pro performance head gaskets also have a wire-ring combustion seat with stainless steel "armor" for extra sealing force around combustion chambers. Made with a pre-flattened steel-wire ring, Fel-Pro performance head gaskets have the strength of steel-wire sealing, and the minimum brinelling of aluminum heads."

So ...... opinions????

I have always used a Felpro 1010, if I remember the number correctly, For a 350.

Re: Head Gasket for AFR's

I think that I've checked out every Felpro SBC head gasket page on Summit and they all have the same generic "Minimal Brinelling of aluminum heads" statement.

My thought was to keep the quench area to .040 to simulate a zero deck height...... I wasn't worried about using these gaskets with cast iron heads, but now that I've spent big $$$ on these aluminum sweethearts I want to get it right. (but I don't want a .065" gap between the piston and head...... Does that sound ridiculous????)

John Lingenfelter's book on modifying SBC engines says that there is a measurable improvement in power by having .040" quench area rather than .060". Even when the compression ratio stays the same........

I don't wanna split hairs here..... and I know .020" seems like a hairs width, but I'm just trying to make the best of my situation. When I get a ZZ4 block in the future I'll Zero deck it......

Opinions are appreciated

Re: Head Gasket for AFR's

Go with felpro multi layer steel gaskets. They are better for aluminum heads and cast iron blocks.

Re: Head Gasket for AFR's

I'm bringing this one back because I'll be tearing this original engine down right after thee baseline dyno run....

Does anybody think that the aluminum expanding and shrinking will cause troubles...?

I'll be getting a hold of Felpro within the next couple of days and should have a solid answer soon

Re: Head Gasket for AFR's

i think .015 is abit thin for aluminum but its rubber coated so it should seal. you could run abit worse quench with a thicker .028 gasket but having good quench is important

I am running felpro 1142 MLS gaskets on my zero decked block for a .041 quench. we'll see how they work but at 75 a piece they better seal fine
