700r retrofit
700r retrofit
I need to know how to retrofit the throttle body on a 1994 lt1 to fit a TV cable for a 1988 700r. I have read on this forum about using a stud that can be bought from a autoparts store but I cant seem to find clear instructions on this. Please HELP!!!

Re: 700r retrofit
I'm confused by your question. Do you have an 88 with an LT1 and you put the non-computer controlled 700R4 behind it? If so, you need to find a TV cable and TB bracket from a 93 LT1. These will work without having to modify anything.
Re: 700r retrofit
I have a 1994 LT1 and It is mated to a 700r yes. I already have a 1993 bracket for holding the gas pedal cable and tv cable. Theres a tv cable in the transmission already that was there from the original 305 tpi motor. I thought from the descriptions I have seen that the TV cable was meant to be pulled further out as you added throttle and mine does the opposite and puts slack in the cable as I open the throttle towards WOT. I ordered the tv easy kit from bowtie transmissions already but I was really hoping to be able to get by without it since its 180$$!!! I am sure I could find somewhere else to spend that 180$$.
Re: 700r retrofit
So as it turns out Bowtie DOESNT make a kit for the LT1. I have read on this site about someone using a stud on the throttle body drilled in a different spot. Can anyone please give me some information about this?!?! I can tell the shifts arent right and I dont wanna burn up a brand new transmission. PLEASE HELP!! I will have it running and ready to drive by tomorrow afternoon and this will be one of the last few things I need to get right.

Re: 700r retrofit
They may have discontinued it, but they did offer it. Probably can still make you one, or even have some left over. If you called them, you might not have talked to the right guy.
Re: 700r retrofit
I talked to Chris. I guess I will call them again and see what they say. Was there a difference in the 700r's at all year to year as far as how the TV cable operated? It shifts ok they just arent crisp, they seem like they are buttered or something......kinda feels like the trans actually slips a lil if I am hard on the pedal. Do you know by chance what size the stud is for the TV cable. I guess I can go buy a stud and attempt drilling a hole where I think it should be, I just didnt wanna guess like that.
On a side note I got the idling bugs and miss worked out in the wiring and drove her today. Even with the trans not right it feels STRONG!! I was trying to baby it knowing the trans isnt right but needed to see if after a short trip if the computer would begin to smooth everything out. It did and she purrs like a kitten now! I am SO HAPPY!!!

Re: 700r retrofit
I hope I didn't miss this but you can't use the TPI TV cable for the LT1. You need to get a TV cable for a 93 Camaro. The TPI cables are too long and won't give you the proper adjustment, as you are currently experiencing. I had the same setup in my 86 before I went to the 6 speed. I ended up using the 93 cable and bracket along with the 93 TB. All the aftermarket LT1 TB's should come with the detent attachment if you have one already.

Ok so I need to get a TV cable for a 1993 camaro, no problem there. However there has to be a way around buying a new throttle body. why couldn't I drill a hole and bolt a stod on the throttle body at the proper distance and on the top of the throttle body? Its hard to swallow spending another 250$ just to get a stupid stud on the throttle body. If I gotta do all that does anybody wanna 15k mile 700r in trade for a 4l60e? I would be willing to come pick it up and bring the 700r to you if you are within 3 hoursish of 46036..

Re: 700r retrofit
I don't think you'll need a new TB. I already had one and it was outfitted with the stud already. Yes, you could fab a stud for the cable end to connect to. Just make sure you measure correctly before you commit to anything. The cable should have an almost straight pull when the throttle opens. There is a slight variance but the straighter the better. I did a frankenstien on mine and took the LT1 throttle lever and adapter it to the TPI TB. It worked but didn't quite look right for some reason.
Re: 700r retrofit
Could you by chance offer me the easiest way of measuring that out? I think from what I can gather its supposed to be a distance of about 1.5" of cable out of the adjuster at closed throttle. Does that sound about right? I have some pictures someone sent me of what the 93 throttle body looks like stock with the TV cable but that just gives me relative placement. I guess I have some more research to do......

Re: 700r retrofit
sorry, no measurements. I did the same thing you are doing, eyeball measuring. And since all of my stuff is in storage right now, I can't dig up my old TB to look. It doesn't have to be exact, just as long as its a straight throw. I never understood the exact placement of the TV cable adjuster. I got mine installed and with the adjuster pushed all the way in, I hooked the cable to the throttle and opened it to wide open throttle. This gave me my range and it worked for me. I know there are guys that tell you the exact number of notches you have to have but trial and error worked for me.
