N2O Assisted LSX T-56 **Now Running**!

UPDATES ON SECOND PAGE, going l92/LS3 route

Well i'm goin at it full bore now! Thinking I didn't want to do the LS swap right away, i built a custom nitrous kit on my car to spray the 'lil 305. Not even 3/4 way through the first bottle, the clutch starts hating life and dies lol. It really did pull hard on a tiny .044" jet though! Instead of pulling the trans to stick in a new clutch, i'm pulling everything out and going ahead with my swap that kind of started over a year ago. I'm going to build everything on another k member and drop the 305 one day, and install the lsx the next. Should work pretty slick!

Parts Bought Also averaging prices for anyone thinking an LS Swap is cheap.......NOT SO

Re: N2O Assisted LSX T-56 Into an '89 IROC!

Hmmm....6.0 iron block, milled 317 heads, MS4...someone's been reading my build thread

The only issue I see with your plans is the LS1 intake. It's not gonna be enough for that nasty cam you're throwing in there. I'd opt for at least an LS6. If I had the money, I'd buy a FAST 92/92 and sell you my LS6. The three things holding my setup back right now are the stock TB, the LS6 intake, and the 317 heads. I'm wanting AFR 215's some day.

Everything else looks good to go though.

Re: N2O Assisted LSX T-56 Into an '89 IROC!

Nasty, i got a pretty good suspension, and i love the mostly stock ls1 i got in the TA! The stall is what makes it so much fun haha. I think power wise the 305 was just as powerful on a 44 jet as the TA.

Nick, I'm not copying you, i'm just building what works on a budget Later on i'll be getting a fast and heads, but i'm a broke college student with 2 nice cars and a nice sled lol. If i hadn't bought the TA i'd be going hog wild on the iroc build...Here's a pic of the TA for ya (got some junk stock rims on it right now)

You'll soon learn that nothing is on a small budget once you crack open the block

Nice T/A too, what'd you do with the wheels in the picture?

Re: N2O Assisted LSX T-56 Into an '89 IROC!

Haha very true. At least i've done enough on cars now that i know to triple my original cost estimate! I'm REALLY doing the bolt ons on a budget though....ie the stock intake and exhaust manis and TB. Everything going into the shortblock is brand new though.

Thanks! It puts the tpi to SHAME haha. I bought it without the wheels. Found some Greg Weld front runners for it locally with new tires though!

Just got some 01 manifolds and LS7 lifters though! I think i'm going to get a melling oil pump and cloyes timing set tomoro.

Re: N2O Assisted LSX T-56 Into an '89 IROC!

Question for ya guys: i know the walbro GSS340 pump is the one to use, but do i need anything that comes in the other pumps kit like the little wire connector and pigtail?

Thanks

You need the pigtail for any non OEM walbro

Any local parts store will carry a 96-97 1500 pickup truck pump. LS1 pressure/flow with 3rd gen external dimensions, $90 and a 7 year warranty

Something to think on

I wouldnt trust stock rod bolts to 7000. Too many on 'tech have exploded at 6500. Im happy making my power under 6000 so Ill build the setup to suit

Meh, it is worth it if you already ordered them, i was scared too till i had SEVERAL friends spinning 7100 tell me to just do it, and i am fine. I see the rod itself snap before the bolts.

Re: N2O Assisted LSX T-56 Into an '89 IROC!

Nothing new really. Just getting some more parts in. Bought a Melling high pressure pump tonight, should work well with the N Motion timing set i hope. LS7 lifters should be here tomorrow. Oh and i finally got an electric fuel pressure gauge.

Another quick question. I got an 03 lq4 that should be rebuilt, but i found a lower mileage 6 liter out of a 2004 chevy 2500 HD. The two motors should be the same correct? I'm wondering when GM went to the front mount cam sensor, as i think the 04 would be a genIV? If it is a gen4, that means it has a 58x reluctor right? If it does i'll have to look for something older, as the ecm i'm using is from the 03 24x

Most trucks went GEN IV in 07, vans 08

The new 6.0 should be no different than the higher mileage one with regards to what you'll be using from it

Filters look identical. Most likely its the same supplier and the middle man is marking them up by slapping their name on. Ive got the WIX in mine, no problems

I can't imagine that there's a handful of different companys making filter/reg combo. I think i'll get alot of the stuff i need yet from rock auto, best prices i've found plus the 5% discount

Got my oil pan stuff today. Sent a massive list of parts i need to my buddy that works at carquest aswell. Spohn mounts are ordered, balancer bolt and pulley.

What fitting are you guys using for a oil pressure sender on that piece by the filter? 1/4 npt?

Most of the gaskets on these motors can be re-used, sincee they are metal and rubber. If they're in good shape, use them, but if the rubber is at all cracked or worn I would not take the chance. The valve cover gaskets on my car have probably 160,000 miles on them, I took them off before I had the covers powder coated and re-installed them. No problems here whatsoever.

Re: N2O Assisted LSX T-56 Into an '89 IROC!

Thanks Nick. I got new timing cover gasket and seal, oil pan gasket, and valley cover gasket.

Updated my first post aswell. I'm not getting anything for the intake or heads yet....i know i can't get this done before fall semester starts, so i might keep saving and get a ls3 intake/rails/injectors and some l92's and mill them .025 or .030. Keyword there is MIGHT, i;d have to change the map and injector wires/connectors on my harness which should be here Friday!

forgot to order the 95 3.4 upper hose though haha

Id recommend new intake gaskets (they're cheap) because they get flattened pretty bad over the years. Everything else other than headgaskets is reusable. Id recommend F/R main seals just for GP too

Good thing i got those with the intake lol. Good catch on the crank seals...that'd suck if i had it in the car and the rear started leaking!

Anyone got some clamshell mounts i can BORROW? They fit in the mid size flat rate box i guess and i'd pay for shipping both ways.

I've got a set you can borrow as long as I get them back lol

Head gaskets can be re-used too if you get the good cometic ones.

It takes 20 mins to put the poly inserts in. I wouldnt bother with a 2nd set unless you aim to set a record or something

I don't have any clamshells yet. My plan is/was to use the stockers as models for the solids i could make for free.

Re: N2O Assisted LSX T-56 Into an '89 IROC!

I don't see how the poly inserts would rot from heat coming off the exhaust. With the longtubes I have, there's a decent distance between the headers and the mounts. My brake lines are only and inch or so from the header and I've never had a problem with the brakes, I don't see why I could get a case of rotten bushings.

Re: N2O Assisted LSX T-56 Into an '89 IROC!

I'm sure the poly's are tougher than nails, but my "budget" is becoming non existent the way things are going lol.

On a different note, i got Pockets harness in the mail today! Looks great and worth every penny. Can't wait for the big brown truck to get here on monday with some other goodies lol. Got quite the list of items to get yet...

As for the nitrous, i'm going to get Lingenfelters LNC-002. Has a 2 step and timing control up to 15*. If i end up going EFI Live instead of HP tuners, i'll use EFI's feature to pull timing. Too bad my Mallory won't work on ls motors Should be fun though... even with 400 to the wheels NA, i'll hit it with a 150 through the standalone, 550rwhp baby!! Should be PLENTY haha

The debate of l92/ls3 still lingers though.....any opinions on that? Stock LS3 injectors are good to ~550rw, buying a complete ls3 intake would be cheaper than getting injectors for the lil ls1 intake i got

Re: N2O Assisted LSX T-56 Into an '89 IROC!

Need help with some items i'm trying to get sorted out:

Where are you guys findings O2 sensors with the 4 wire flat connectors? A certain make/model/year would be great.

How do you guys like the cableX box? I heard it's kind of slow when you start moving, but doesn't seem like a big deal. Was looking at electric speedos, but than i'd get the urge to do what 5.7kid did and get ALL new gauges lol

Are any of you running hot on the stock 3rd gen radiator? A buddy of mine has a no name aluminum one for sale.

Thanks

Re: N2O Assisted LSX T-56 Into an '89 IROC!

90's-00's S10s all used the 4 wire flat O2s and had 3-4 per truck. Get more than you need in case you get a bad one or two. LT1 cars used the 4 wire flats for the front O2s and LS1 4 sq females for the rears, but are less common

Read this on the Cable-X box
http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/conver...ease-tell.html

Id personally update the gauges unless you just like the looks of the stockers

My stock 92 radiator with a single fan is keeping me cool

Damn Pocket i think you should be like Patrick the cam god on tech, start charging a buck for every question you answer on here, you'd be 1000s richer by next week lol. Seriously you're the most knowledgable guy on here.

I might redo everything to ultra-lites for the gauges, already using a water and oil temp.

I passed on that rad, fins where bent and although i've bent numerous straight on tractors (my other hobby is restoring old iron) i don't want to risk anything on this car

Edit: Forgot to ask...manual or power steering? If i can find a power steering pump i'll go power, but i can't find one for a decent price and new is 300+

Re: N2O Assisted LSX T-56 Into an '89 IROC!

I wouldnt go that far...

Id stick with PS. The bracket, and pulley are cheapies off ebay for <$50. From previous experience Id suggest a new pump and high pressure line with a warranty from a local parts store. The hard part to find is the reservoir. Check 'tech, you may get lucky and find one for around $30. New they are about $80 (more than the pump)

Found a ps bracket for 35 shipped, new pump and pulley for 90, and res for 60 on flebay...ugh

Re: N2O Assisted LSX T-56 Into an '89 IROC!

I got to remember to bring the camera out lol.

NOt much has happened. Got the spohn mounts on the k though. Did order a new water pump/pulley/gaskets, Front cover gasket and seal, rear cover gasket and seal, valley cover gasket and oil pan gasket.

Been extremely busy framing those massive fans in and the other daily tasks of dairying haha.

It's really coming down to $$$ to order all the little **** that ends up costing more than the motor itself. Got another $200 worth of crap in my rockauto cart that i need to order.

Hows your car coming along? You spray through Daves plate yet?

Re: N2O Assisted LSX T-56 Into an '89 IROC!

Biggest problem i'm having with this build is knowing where to stop.

Since i'll have the front end all apart do i put all new steering parts in? tierods center link bushings etc.
Do i get tubular a arms or spend the $100 on putting new ball joints and poly bushings in the stockers, and still have to blast and paint them?
Get new upper strut mounts?

Or just leave everything the way it is....

It's a vicious cycle...

I kept the stock stuff with new bushings/ball joints. Had I not been in such a hurry, I would have degreased and painted everything
