Value of Totaled 99' TA
Buddy of mine totaled his 99 trans am with a LS1 and 6 speed. the front subframe is garbage, but he drove it home with no issues after stuffing it head first into a ditch so it is presumed all the mechanics are in decent shape. He is looking for around $2500 for the whole car. Seem reasonable? I've been too busy in school to keep up with the market for parts like this.

hah no deal :P I think if i bought it id take the whole drivetrain and a few interior pieces for my own shenanigans, then piece out the other useful stuff and scrap the shell.
Im thinkin the engine and tranny are worth $1500-$2000 alone so it is probably worth it at that point. just not really sure.

What's mileage on the car? If it was well maintained decent mileage you can easely get 3-4 grand for the engine, trans, harness, and rear I would think. Even high mileage easely 2500. If the seats and center console is still good there's another couple hundred. Depending how good of a friend he is I would buy the whole thing for 2500 and make a grand off it. If he is a good friend then tell him to part the car out, he can make more then 2500

Re: Value of Totaled 99' TA
I paid $4000 for mine last year when I bought it from copart.com. It was wrecked on the drivers side, but it did have perfect ebony leather, 6 speed, factory SS hood and spoiler, and tons of other good parts that I sold off. I used the LS brakes on my dads convertible, sold the hood and spoiler, and all interior pieces, sold the airbox and tons of other misc parts and have essentially made about 1/2 to 3/4 of my money back while keeping the harness, radiator, engine and tranny and rear. I could have made a ton more money if I wanted to sell the ebony seats and LS brakes but I needed them for myself and my dad. The rear is the last thing I have left along with some misc parts like the steering column, but I should put the rear on craigslist soon and it will sell quick.

Re: Value of Totaled 99' TA
He's a real good friend but he just doesn't want to deal with it. Its pretty clear from a cursory look that it's more than cosmetic, and since he's going like 6 other cars he plays around with he just wants to get it out of his garage and he knew im working on my thirdgen.
I guess the biggest issue would be finding a way to get it from Flint to Pittsburgh. 6 hr drive does not sound like fun in a totaled TA, though I'd totally do it if I didn't already have my own car up here...

2500 isnt a bad deal for that car. You'd be surprised how much you can part out from interior to body panels, and small parts. Motor and trans are easily worth 3g if decent shape and somewhat lower mileage.
I bought a salvaged 99 TA with 87K miles on it for 5500. R-title but reconstructed and now its my daily driver. Has its quirks but mechanically pretty sound. Runs strong. I couldnt be happier, unless it was a 6 spd car.

I agree it is probably not a bad deal. As far as I am aware it still has a clean title (hasn't reported it) and didn't have a terribly large amount of miles on it.
Still, the nagging issue is 1 driver getting 2 cars from Michigan to PA. I could probably limp the TA through MI and OH as long as I stayed off the turnpike, but that would still leave my little D.D. 300+ miles away

You could get it transported for a couple hundred I would think. I looked into getting a Grand Prix transported from New York to Missouri a while back and it was gonna be about $600 and that's a lot further than your trip.
That's a pretty good price too. I'd snag it up for a swap if I were you!

Re: Value of Totaled 99' TA
For copart to ship my car it would have been 675 from NY to OH so I just loaded up my truck and trailer and headed out. I still spent about 200 in gas though.

Re: Value of Totaled 99' TA
For that price, go LS1 if its in good condition. I dont know the mileage or abuse that motor went through but they are strong. cam only can do 400whp where a 383sbc will take good heads/big cam/good intake to do all that. Your not gonna get a built tranny and a built 383 for under 2500 unless you would have bought my old setup
T56 is for the win! Swap right in place of the T5 you have now. Works well with the LS1, it would be a fun car to have. Even full bolt ons/tune will do near 350whp which is still capable of high 11's in a thirdgen.
If you can get the car, its well worth the effort and cost here, as long as the motor is in good shape....that the key here.

Re: Value of Totaled 99' TA
Im sure it's undergone some abuse (what TA hasn't) but the man knew how to take care of a car too so I'm sure it wasnt terrible. Ran fine last time I was in it. I'll havta get the mileage and go really poke around it to be sure it's worth it. I havnt seen the car since earlier in the day it was wrecked. We shall see we shall see!
