ls1/t56 swap in my 87transam
Well I think I have bothered enough people in this forum to get my swap going and post a few pics.First I want to say to everyone..dont you get scarred when a swap seems to go too easy lol. Then suddenly comes to a halt when you get hung up somewhere.
Well Im renting a bay at a friends garage during this week to see how far along I can try to stuff this in and get it running.Comparing to quite a few threads Ive read..things that shouldve given me issues didnt put up much fight.Im using hawks lsx mounts for motor and trans, new poly bushings, tick master cylinder,4th gen pedals and bone stock 2000 ls1.
mounting the pedals and drilling for the master went very easy.I removed the old auto brake pedal, hung the 4th gen pedals.Using the 4th gen bracket I drilled the new holes which come close to the steering shaft on firewall.the clutch pedal rod lines up straight and doesnt show any sign of binding.I also cut the hole in the trans tunnel within the 4 bolt holes from the old auto shifter and had plenty of clearance for the 6spd shifter.
I ran my main harness just under the center of the heater box and made a 2inch hole to feed all the wires through.Im hoping I have enough wire length to tuck the ecm near the stock location.
Unlike many guys,I choose not to drop the k member to do my swap, nor did I want to install the trans and motor seperately. This made things tricky but not overly hard.My mistake was being too confident that the back passenger coil should have cleared the ac box without having to mod it and take that 1 coil off(I was very wrong lol).I dropped everything in from the top in about an hr by using a cherry picker and a engine leveler on the crane. The hardest part was getting the oil pan to clear the k member and not break the brake line.Also..made contact with the wiper motor just a hair with the coil bracket on the driver side.I havent tried putting back on the torque arm mount yet but hopefully wont be too bad.
I debated long and hard about redoing my engine bay since it looks very rough now compared to the last time I had it painted but my excuse is I plan on pulling it back out in winter to build the full motor.Thats when Ill spend a few days making it very clean and smoothed out with a fresh coat of black paint. For now.. maybe a few rattle cans to touch it up some.Im going to have a y pipe made and locate the o2s in it.I still need to plumb the fuel system and hook up my wires, get a new starter/alternator and see how she runs.
I have a few small detail questions though, above the oil filter on the block seems to be an open port for oil.was there and option for an oil cooler on these motors and if so...does it come off? Second,I drilled and tapped the waterpump for the steam tube, can I still run coolant through the throttle body this way?
Here are some crappy cell phone pics

Re: ls1/t56 swap in my 87transam
Im also using the ls1 lokar throttle cable and I must say...looks soo nice and very easy to make it work on the thirdgen pedal without bending anything.I did however have to sacrifice the old tpi cable to make it all work perfectly.
I removed the tpi cable and cut it at the grommet edge on both sides.i kept the small plastic clip/retainer that goes onto the gas pedal, then I drilled out the center of the grommet just big enough to let the threaded end of the lokar cable to fit through.took apart the lokar cable and slid the tpi retainer onto it,tighten the cable to the grommet. Now it plugs into the firewall like factory..hooks onto the gas pedal all factory..then make your cable adjustments and trim the excess off

more pics.
1.hole in the trans tunnel.can still go back to auto if need be.
2.the tick master cylinder fit amazing in that spot on the first try lol.very nice piece even though expsensive.its a good investment for high rpm shifting.
3.motor mounts inplace.having a hoist to bolt these in and with a few well place universal joint sockets made this much easier to install

it truly is
.i always dreamed of having an ls1 car and now that i finally do..wow its amazing even stock.Cant wait to start modding it and see bit by bit how it makes more power and remain very streetable.I just need to get my tach working and im 100% happy

Re: ls1/t56 swap in my 87transam
I got the car almost all buttoned up.Just needs to go to the exhaust shop for a custom y pipe and then maybe see if I can dyno tune it a lil more power out of the stock ls1.But the car feels soo smooth and the ls7 clutch is like butter but plenty grabby.
Funny how old habits die hard..I keeping forgetting the car is stick and dont push the clutch in to crank her over, then im expecting the trans to shift into second for me in my lazyness
I bought this motor with what is close to 90,000km and was told it smokes on startup.Well I figured why not see how good royal purple fluids are all around,I put in synthetic oil, syncromax, and diff fluid, and water.Cost a pretty penny but wow the motor doesnt smoke at all, trans shifts with such ease, the rear diff doesnt have that lil whine to it.Overall the car is solid.I cant wait to put some ods on it and see what the ls1 hype truly is. Im inlove with my car again..just wish the weight savings on the frontend didnt raise my eibachs soo much that I need to cut the springs

After having driven the stick car, even just around the block, and then getting into the auto car, I have a tendency to go for the clutch - since the brake pedal in the auto car is wider, I've come close to eating the steering wheel a couple of times...
Re: ls1/t56 swap in my 87transam
Congrats mannnn.. I'm on the way... are you using the 3rdgen brake booster?
I'm doing the same swap and stuck on mounting the pedals... Do you have a pic of them mounted? How big are the holes you drilled?

Re: ls1/t56 swap in my 87transam
yes im using the 3gen master.actually mounting the pedals was easier than i expected.I suggest you hang the pedals in place first and then mark roughly where the new holes should be drilled.I also roughly marked on the 4thgen pedals roughly where my 3rd gen pedals were bolted onto so that things went back the same for alignment.
I dont have pics of my pedals after I put them in but I followed this link below and it really helped out,no issues so far.Im using a tick master ..which is beastly compared to the stock ls1 master. It was tricky to get it into postion but not overly difficult having a second person start the bolts up by hand inside the car.

Lol my new tendency is to forget that I need to shift each gear and not hit rev limiter :P.Im slowly getting there.
