Re: 89 GTA LS1 swap
Been driving the GTA lately. Haven't done much to it. I fixed a few little things and put a cd player in it finally.
I bought some Konis shocks/struts and Eibach springs from a member on, I finally got around to putting them on today. After puting the LS1 in the front sat 1/2" higher than the rear. From the ground to the wheel wells the front was 28.5" and the rear was 28". I was expecting these springs to lower the car more but I was pleasantly surprised they leveled it out. It's now 27.5" all around, maybe a hair lower in the front. It's looked pretty stupid with the front sitting high but it looks a lot better now
Next order of business is to get some tires on my C6 wheels and put those on, then tint the windows. Once I get some other projects out of the way I'll paint it but that's probably gonna be a couple years. I have a total of 3 4th gen rears, one of which is in my 01 TA. This one came out of the 98 Camaro I bought to donate it's engine and trans to my 69 Firebird. It's got 4.10 gears which would be nice in either the 89 or 01 but the car wasn't running when I bought it so I have no idea if they are noisy. I put the rear wheels on to see how wide they'd be with this axle in the 89. I don't know if I'll put it in or just leave the 9 bolt in and use adaptors

Axle/Gears: 9 bolt posi w/ 3.70 gears
Re: 89 GTA LS1 swap
The new springs should settle some over the next few weeks with the car weight on them. I'm glad that it leveled your car out. I was wondering that about mine too. Hopefully I get the same result.
The 9 bolt is a little stronger, but those 4.10 gears would be fun. Not so great for the gas mileage though.
Are those C6's for the rear 10.5" wide? They look really wide on that rearend.

I don't know how many miles are on the springs but they are used. Hopefully they do settle a little.
I was wanting to turbo this car and if I went that route the stock gearing would be fine but I'm thinking I'll turbo my 69 and leave this one NA which would be much better with some 4.10s. If I don't use the 4th gen rear I'll either re-gear the 9 bolt or swap to a ford 8.8" or 9". Mileage shouldn't be much worse with a 6 speed.
The wheels are factory C6s, 18x8.5 front and 19x10 rear.

Re: 89 GTA LS1 swap
Man photobucket can lick my *****. It's a good thing I didn't put more pics in this thread because I just replaced all the links with imgur links.
I drive the GTA a lot as is. I'm working in Afghanistan again, so I bought a bunch of parts to play with while I was home last summer.
I wanted Speed Engineering's headers for my 01 TA, 00 Silverado, and 69 Firebird. They didn't have a 3rd gen set at the time, so I bought a 2nd gen set to see if I could make them fit, and talked them into a discount for all 4 sets.
I managed to make the 2nd gen set fit. I had to modify the passenger collector and frame rail
But before I built a y pipe they came out with their 3rd gen set. They tuck up higher so that's nice.
Put them in last week

Re: 89 GTA LS1 swap
So I was just home and wanted to put these headers in and build a y pipe. I need a good pipe expander so I bought Lisle's kit. Ordered a couple 3" bends and some pipe.
Expanding one of the bends to fit over the header collector
It's a little slow going on stainless but it worked well. A hose clamp works good for marking a cut line on a bend
I need to get a real bandsaw but my portable one clamped in a vise works ok
My tig welding skills suck. I used too thick of a filler on the header I modified and it looks like dog doo. I figured out I needed a smaller filler and these welds came out much better
Trying to figure out how to route it
I tied 3" pipes into a 4" and stepped it down at the rear to connect to the rest of the cat back
Done and installed
Ground clearance is good

Re: 89 GTA LS1 swap
I love this car
I also put a Momo wheel and a Hinson shifter in it. This wheel is too small, I didn't realize what diameter it was when I ordered it. I like the look though.
The shifter is nice, but the handle is too short so I'll lengthen it. I honestly like my MGW better and it's cheaper

Re: 89 GTA LS1 swap
I decided to pick up an IROC. Looked for a couple months and finally had a buddy go get this one in MT.
