How did you make your intake pipe

Im looking into making my intake pipe soon and was wondering what everyone used to make theirs and if you have any pics of them. Im not sure what route I want to go yet as if I want it thru the driver side tray and go down to under the car or leave it in the engine bay. If anyone can help me out let me know

Thanks

I would recommend leaving it in the engine bay. A member on here toasted an engine after driving through some water with the filter mounted below.

Here is mine. Made from 4" tubing and couplers from intakehoses.com

That Looks Perfect man as its exactly what I want to do.

Yeah I was concerned about water and other things flying up in the filter if i put it under. I might make something to divert the air up to it then and box it in so i dont get engine heat in it

4" polished alum pipe, two 90* elbows, and a huge K&N filter mounted below the tray. It never sees rain so I'm not worried about it hydro locking.

mine's very similar to five7's, but I put my MAF in the middle to cut down on any turbulence and give a more accurate read

Just to clarify...I accidentally drove into a puddle that was WAY deeper than it looked. It was up to my doors. Dont ask how... There were no other cars, and the water was clear so I saw the lines. Figured it was a couple inches and ide roll through it. Oops... No way to turn around, and back the other way was even more flooded. It wasnt supposed to rain that day dang it!! In normal rain/wet roads, the filter stayed completely dry though. Even hitting average puddles. But when the water level is higher than the lowest part of the filter...its no good.

I have it set up just like BlueZee right now...but going to change it to look Pocket's and Five7's...which is close to how it was originally. I just didnt like the IATs I saw there, and will probably move it over to the tray area and add a shield next time around. Now that I have a big 4.5" hole in my battery tray I did enjoy seeing ambient air IATs though haha.

intakehoses.com and an Amsoil filter for me. Great prices, quick shipping, and that filter rocks.

Re: How did you make your intake pipe

From experience siliconeintakes seems to have decent deals, The only one with a decent selection of red tubes. I got a elbow reducer for 20 that if you buy a trick flow or any other is over 100 for whatever reason. I plan to put the filter in the drivers side tray. trying to decide if i want a 3.5 metal tube to a 45 or a 4" metal tube to a 45. The way it is now its resting on the coolant hose. Still get ambient intake air temps tho.

You could always run a bypass valve like this link that way if the filter is ever submerged in water it will pull through this and not the filter. They are kind of ugly, but I put them on a ton of import cars back in the day to aviod any blame on me when the owner was dumb and drove through deep water.

Eeeeeeaaaasssy.... Haha.

Ive seen those. Couldnt find them in 4". Plus I always figured the little 4cyls might not huff as much as our bigger motors. One good inhale and Ide be worried water would still get in. I mean...my car was at idle, and of my 9" of filter, only an inch or so was in water. So it pulled enough that it sucked straight up. I would think in my case water would still have found its way into my motor even with that bypass deal. And I hate myself every day for that screw up.

Sorry, I wasn't referring to you when I said dumb people.
I used to put CAI on all kinds of cars and I will never forget arguing with someone who drove through water that was about 3 feet deep and the motor did just like yours and locked up. He was mad and wanted me to pay for it since I installed the intake. Since that day if I put an intake on someone elses car they got one of these. On a side note AEM used to make one that was at least 3" but I do not recall one in a 4" so maybe they do not exist in bigger sizes.

Re: How did you make your intake pipe

Keep it under the hood if its a regularly driven car and put it outboard if your keeping it as a track queen. I ran both on my last set up and my fastest trap and best ET ( on different days ) were with the underhood filter anyways. Im not saying there might be power gains from the fresh air system where the fiter is outside but its very very slight. Certainly not going to make nearly as much difference as say one size up or down in cam selection would so I wouldnt get too hung up on it just get a big filter and go enjoy it

Good thread, lots of nice installs.

For those that have gone through the trays for colder are, how did you make the transistion? What size filter are you running below?

Mine is not a DD so not too worried about water.

Re: How did you make your intake pipe

Id also like to add that hawks now sells a cai kit from their website. Too bad it was just a week after I got mine done! But what I did was buy a cai kit for the new ls3 camaros and some trucks at autozone and convinced it to fit in my engine bay. (Took alot of convincing) lol but I also used a fourth gen upper radiator hose instead of hawks which I think allows you to go under the hose for the intake as the fourth gen one doesn't. So we ended up banging the side of the pipe to make that fit right and we also barely squeezed the intake cone in there. But it works now at least!

How do you mean? Like how did we go through the tray and hook to the filter? If so, I can tell you how I did mine.

I used a 4.5" hole saw that I happened to have laying around. Then I used a piece of 3/8" fuel hose, split length wise, to "finish" the edge. This just so happened to make a pretty snug fit to my 4" intake tubing. So things just kind of held together nice and tight on their own.

Here it is without the fuel line to finish the edge.

If thats not what you were asking about...my apologies. There are also other ways to accomplish this for sure..just showing what I did.

Thanks, that is exactly what I was wondering. I was thinking of using mounting plates on both sides of the tray for support of the intake tubing above and below the tray, but looks like a tight fit works fine.

What length of filter are you running?

Re: How did you make your intake pipe

Just happened to still have my part number for the filter. I ordered it directly from Amsoil's website at the time. Because I wanted specific dimensions.

Part # EAAU4070.

Specs are:

Style: Round Tapered
Flange Type: Center
Base O.D.: 6"
Flange I.D.: 4"
Media Height: 7"
Top O.D.: 4"

So the total height is a little over 7" when you include the flange. Here is a shot that might help you visualize its size a bit better. Before I put any covers/shielding back on.
