should i go for it?
hey guys i need advice. and i know this is the perfect forum for this. well heres my situation. a friend of mine pulled his lt1 out his 96' vette and told me i can have his lt1 for free, seeing as im on a budget should i take it? he said him and his father rebuilt the top end 33k ago and never touched the bottom end, the engine doesnt smoke at all! if i were to take this engine my plan would be to make it a tbi, but i would get a nice intake for it to breath and all that stuff. now my question is, is this all possible? having a lt1 with a tbi. also i want to use my t5 trans. and the reason why he is giving me his engine is because me and him built a 401 for his vette and doesnt want the engine just sitting. he said i can also have his cam, illhave to get the specs on that came but i know for sure that cam is a beast! lol well thanks guys for checkin out my thread.

So you want to trade in MFI for TBI. Sure makes sense to me, why would you want to deal with 8 injectors that could go bad when you only have two with a TBI and you can run a cooler air cleaner. I'd say go for it!
BTW, TBI's love large cams. Some even get away with no chip burn.

Re: should i go for it?
that was all sarcasm.... the lt1 is not bad if you can get it for free. the problem is its an optispark engine, meaning it doesnt run a distributor. its possible to convert to tbi, but would require a very expensive carb intake and then a tb adapter on top of that and modding for the distributor. if you can get an lt1 wiring harness and computer, then you can keep the stock MPFI (which is way better than TBI). take a look on the ltx/lsx sub forum for whats need to put an lt1 in a 3rd gen.

if you're only getting the shortblock, its really not going to be worth your while. just getting it back into stock lt1 trim is not going to be cheap and trying to take a step back and turn it into a tbi setup even more so.

from me, that has the LS fever, bad, id take all that free stuff and sell it off and invest in a cheap LS engine/swap. Just my 2 cents. remember, i have the LS sickness.

well if you look at it from that angle, i completely agree. i know i've got the fever, not quite sure if its the full on sickness yet though. although i have had 3 ls family engines under the hood and the car has never even left the driveway......
