Painting ls1 intake

Is there a certain paint everyone is using to paint their intakes? Any certain prep that needs to be done? Should i use plastic paint prep? I want to paint my valve covers the same color so id like to use 1 paint for both. Its gonna be graphite in color to match the stock mesh wheels on my trans am thanks

Re: Painting ls1 intake

Sounds like you and I have very similar ideas. I'm planning on painting my valve covers and intake the same graphite color.

In the past, I've cleaned my plastic parts with a little bit of brake cleaner, followed by some primer and my paint of choice, and I've never had any problems with adhesion.

Re: Painting ls1 intake

I painted the 4th gen battery hold/ coolant overflow by cleaning it with some brake cleaner, then sanding it with a scotch pad. Then I gave it 2 light coats of adhesion promoter. Let dry for a few, then couple coats of primer. Dry, then color. Looks good

I plan to use similar process on intake and valve covers. I seen a thread over at tech that I used. They also used clear on the intake.

Re: Painting ls1 intake

I read that same thread about an hour ago. The intake looks real impressive for a rattle can job.

Re: Painting ls1 intake

A super good bath first..then scotch pad..bath again..let dry very well. Some would just base clear it like that with high heat paint and looks good.Taking your time is what gives a great rattle can job.First coat should be misted on..flash time of 15-20 mins at room temp atleast..then second coat a lil heavier to bring the color up...flash again 15-20 mins.then a third final cot to even things out..by this point you wont even see the grain of the intake itself..it should look like it was sanded and prepped by hand lol.I always suggest clear coating it aswell with high heat paint..doesnt have to be gloss clear..this is where ppl go crazy and mess up is by spraying heavy cleat right on and it builds up to a thick mess with runs.

yep what 86white and triple 6 said. i used ceramic engine paint, and with any paint job, it's only as good as the prep you put into it!

Re: Painting ls1 intake

I sanded mine to get rid of the mold marks and give the primer something better to stick to. I dont see any reason a quick scotch, prime and paint wouldnt do the job

Additionally, I would recomend the use of wax and grease remover before paint. They make a plastic specific wax and grease remover. You will have issues if you use the standard wax and grease remover on plastic.

Re: Painting ls1 intake

I used high heat flat red engine enamel by vht.Got it at my local parts store "Canadian Tire" but any Nappa or Autozone etc would carry it.And 2 coats of clear.Im thinking I might paint the whole motor in this color to match my car.Under the hood is all gloss black already..would stand out.

Re: Painting ls1 intake

My spare ls6 intake had the rear port plastic welded and epoxy sealed then pressure tested. Its quite common for guys to break them trying to take them off and paint the intake or replace the seal.I bought the ls6 intake before I found my lq4 with an ls6 on it already..double score lol.
