formula trans am project

i have a plan to put a stroked ls1 from a 2002 trans am into an older f-body trans am with twin turbos mounted in the rear does any one have information that might help me figure out if this has been done before and if there is a street legal way to twin turbo the ls1 from the rear. any help is appreciated

Re: formula trans am project

you'd be in new territory attempting a twin reat turbo setup, but i can't imagine you're going to have much ground clearance without some serious fabbing skills when it comes to exhaust parts. however, if you do go forward, plenty of pics!

For the pipes I'm going to use 3" pipes that are ovaled with an x I'm going to do an independent rear axle as well. People have successfully fabricated independent rear axle's correct.

Yes, but you need to focus on one thing at a time lol, an ls1 stroker is a very expensive project as well as the 2nd person that I know of just fabbed up a C4 rearend. That is very expensive as well

Well I didn't want to do a c4 rear axle I wanted to use a smaller more versitl rear axle like from a jag. Or a newer infinity suv.

Re: formula trans am project

STS makes a twin rear set up dont they? If it'll fit a 4th gen, it should fit a thirdgen. At least the turbo mounting. Piping will have to be custom either way.

You are looking at quite the project. Even with oval tubing you are going to have fun stuffing that all under the car at stock ride height. I dont think you need huge piping with the rear mount turbos. If you were willing to go down in size a bit, and get creative, you could probably run it similar to a true dual set up. Modifying the floor pan wouldnt be TOO much trouble if you are willing to do some sheet metal work. Im sayin I think you can probably get it done with the solid rear...tho I can understand the IRS being something you want to do.

If you are set on IRS, I would start there. Because your piping, turbo mounting, and all will work around that rear. But I would decide for sure what you want to do back there.

Doable for sure.... You are looking at a LOT of money. Which Im sure you know..and maybe you dont mind haha. If thats the case, this should be a fun build!

Good luck...

I would think 20k would cover a stroked LS1, swap parts, supporting mods for the power (trans, suspension, driveline, fuel, etc). MAYBE cover it... Then add turbos, piping, more supporting mods for running turbos... Its gonna climb quick.

Re: formula trans am project

Well this project isn't even going to start until about 3 years and I'm going to try to do all of the work myself. I have a couple of engineer friends helping me design aspects of the cars structure and Ed Hanson is fabricating the exhaust(my design) I want to keep it street legal so I am going to just get the 02 firebird gut it and piece it out to make some money for the rest of the project. I currently have an 85 with an automatic. I am not sure what I am going to do transmition wise, I was tossing around the idea of doing a paddle shifted automatic with no shifter in the center consol or a t56 not too sure...

Yeah, but at least he isn't asking about lambo doors. I admire the enthusiasm, but as always its easy to underestimate the difficulty and expense of any project. I've been working on cars for years and still found the basic ls1 swap to be a fun challenge.

Re: formula trans am project

So unstableaviator since you have done multiple ls1 swaps if I purchased an entire 02 trans am as a doner car then sold the parts how much do you think this project could cost me?
