Killing fuel pumps after ls1 swap?

Dont know if anyone has had an issue like this before but my car seems to go through fuel pumps rather too easily. Before I did my ls1 swap I installed a cheap 255lph walbro ebay clone pump.Which I didnt expect to last long but it fed my built 355 tpi and my 383 hsr no problems. After my ls1 swap this pump lasted just shy of 4 months and left me stranded back in november 3hrs away from home on a saturday morning at 3am .had my car flatbed to my house since its low..and that was no cheap tow lol.I did my own hotwire fuel pump relay kit and its located close to my fuse panel for easy replacement of the relay or fuse off the battery directly. That sunday I bought a brand new replacement for a tpi car and verified it for tpi not tbi,I already made a fuel pump access hole and swapped pump in my driveway in an hr and was back on the road.

Now that same pump is soo loud when the car primes and is running..I can feel it running with my feet on the floor. If i turn on anything..lights,defrost,wiper etc..you can hear the pump react to voltage drop.Im in the middle of doing my lq4 swap this weekend...I want to get a legit walbro pump but I need to figure out if there is anything I can do to prevent a good name brand pump from going bad after a few months of feeding my lsx.I have my car setup with the corvette fuel regulator,my evap line isnt capped, just tucked down with a piece of fi hose,no vented gas cap,and the stock vent/check valve line from the tank.Sometimes when i go to fill gas..the tank will hiss when the cap is released.Wiring i know is sound as I ran 8ga wire from the tank to the battery for both12v and ground..i wasnt playing around with the old stock crap.

Anyone have any ideas as to why fuel pumps dont last or do I just need a true quality pump? Thanks in advance.

the only thing I can think of is when you changed the pump, did you change the wiring harness that goes in the tank, those wires could cause voltage drops and fry your pump.

Re: Killing fuel pumps after ls1 swap?

Nope, intank wires are the same.If the wires were reversed..the pump would short to ground right away and it would be clear issue to fix.The pump will work fine for a few months, very quiet normal operation and fuel pressure.Right now the pump is very loud..I dont have a pressure gauge to see if there is any drop but the car fires up and runs fine without starving for fuel at high rpms so I doubt the pressure is a problem at this point, but I know pumps get quite loud before their lasts breaths.

i use only AC delco pumps and like the EP-381 pump, it's cheap from rock auto and we've used a bunch of them on gen 3/4 swaps with no issues.

a fuel pump is like an oil pump....you absolutely have to have it. so don't skimp out when buying a new one. start with a good pump, that is the best advice i can give.

Re: Killing fuel pumps after ls1 swap?

I agree but at the sametime..I dont want to put a good pump in there and 3 months later kill a pump because of some underlying issue I can prevent first. The pump in there now is an ac delco aswell for tpi.Im getting a walbro but want to see if anything i can do to eliminate future issues once it goes in.Wanted to be sure I wasnt over working the pumps somehow..or needed a vented gas cap.or if capping the evap line was bad etc

Re: Killing fuel pumps after ls1 swap?

what is the max flow psi on the pump you have installed? if its just for tpi, it may not be able to handle the constant 58psi that the ls's require.

Re: Killing fuel pumps after ls1 swap?

Running low on fuel kills in tank pumps FAST. They need to be constantly bathed in fuel to stay cool. In stock vehicle applications you dont want the fuel level light to come on, ever, if poss. This is what toasts them quick

But sometimes you just get craptastic pumps. It happens

Re: Killing fuel pumps after ls1 swap?

If the pump is setup for TPI, it is designed to run at about 40 psi, your LSx motor is running at about 58psi, a 50% increase in running pressure will shorten the life of your pump for sure. Make sure to get a pump designed to run at the pressure the system needs.

First pump died because that's what it was designed to do. Avoid cheaply-made Chinese knockoff pumps.

Second pump died because you asked it to make 58psi when it was designed to make 40-45psi.

Buy an actual Walbro GSS-340 high-pressure pump and you'll be set. I've been running one on my LS1 swap, factory wiring, since 2004.

Re: Killing fuel pumps after ls1 swap?

Been reading up on these forums because I plan on doing an LS1 swap in my 84. I noticed, however, that the fuel pump offered only starts at 85. Will there be a problem with my 84 if I get that one or would I be better off getting the "universal kit"?
