Looking to maggie my lq4,need advice.

As the end of the season is approaching I want to start piecing together my winter build.Currently my mods are very mild as its a stock lq4 with ls6 intake,228r 112lsa cam kit,85mm maf and cat back exhaust.I love maggies/whipples..though they are not as efficient or make the most power,I still want one lol.

My plans over winter are to so far is header/ypipe upgrade, custom dual 3inch true cold air intake setup, battery relocation to the rear, brakes and more suspension upgrades.

I have fbody accessories and I want to add a maggie of some sort but dont know what kit to use that would work on my setup.I plan on running 6-8psi of boost..not much at all.Just enough to get me over the 400whp/tq without diving any further into the current setup and being dd.

Looking at the hawks site for their kit doesnt say great detail of what I may need.Do I have to change my walbro 255intank pump or vette filter/regulator out.Do I need a super dampner?Would the tvs1900 be too small for the lq4 or should I look at getting the 2300?Lots of questions..thanks for any info.Anyone with maggies on the lsx..please chime in.Im gathering info and saving for a massive credit bday/xmas gift to myself lol.

Re: Looking to maggie my lq4,need advice.

Are you trying to fabricate a setup yourself, or are you looking at kits to start with ?

IIRC the 1.9L is better efficiency wise around 600ish? wheel horsepower, somewhere above that the efficiencies get better with the larger blower.

A 1.9L Whipple is nowhere near in the same class as a "maggie" magnachargers kits that people are referring to generally use an MP112 blower, which isnt anywhere near the powerhouse that a 1.9 twin screw is.

Re: Looking to maggie my lq4,need advice.

If buying new, Id skip all but the TVS2300 for a classisc roots, if going twin screw, go with the largest you can afford and spin it faster/slower to suit your goals

If buying used, find whatever truck kit you can get the cheapest, M112, M122, etc

For accessories, Id keep the Fbody parts, but keep in mind almost all roots kits will be for corvette or truck. Magnacharger may be willing to refit your blower to suit, but Ive found its easier to space Fbody accessories out to match a truck style blower kit. 3/4" is all you need on the WP and accessories

Re: Looking to maggie my lq4,need advice.

Eeesh, i'm always searching for the short front stuff for other swaps, thats what I get for having a small car. I'd pull my hair out if I had to run truck depth stuff.

Going straight for a 2300 doesnt make much sense unless his goals require it, end up needing more boost to make the same power when using something less efficient for the power level.

Re: Looking to maggie my lq4,need advice.

when i was turbo my walbro 255 with a hotwire kit and a boost a pump was maxed at 9 psi and no timing... so id say try the new aero. 340 pump and a hotwire kit. The biggest thing your gonna have to battle with is iat's and heat soak with the twin screw units and the 112lsa on your cam wont work too well with boost... not saying it wont work but a 114 or 115 would have been better suited..

Twin supra denso pumps.

Hopefully you are talking about a different aeromotive, the 340 I just saw last night that was advertised as supporting 650HP, had a 60 psi max pressure.

Have you even done a LSx swap? Theres a TON of room in front of the engine, so shifting the Fbody accessories forward 3/4" is hardly even noticeable. He WILL notice the height difference requiring a new hood for any roots setup though

Reading is tricky for you isnt it ?

If you look to the left you can see my reference to a "small car" goes with a non thirdgen.

Nowhere in my post did I say it would not fit in a thirdgen nor did I say it was a bad idea for him.

Re: Looking to maggie my lq4,need advice.

Im looking for a kit as a place to start thats as bolt on as possible.I have no clue about the major difference in drive accessories to know what kit would make it easier to install.Im not looking for heavy boost..6-8psi max and my cam isnt the best for this at 112lsa but for my goals it shouldnt be too bad.Im shooting to get over the 400whp hump..I know doing full longtubes will help that alot as it is.Once over 400whp..whatever I get is just gravy.

If I get a truck kit instead of spacing everything 3/4..can the drive on the charger be shortened 3/4? Sounds like the m112/122 could be all I need but the 2300 will give me that or more if I feel the need to be greedy.

Re: Looking to maggie my lq4,need advice.

What front accessory drive do you currently have ?

If its F body, then you'll want to look at kits for the 04-06 GTO

Re: Looking to maggie my lq4,need advice.

If all you want is 400 rwhp why not just get a set of 243's ported and get a fast 90/92? That with ur vurrent mods should put you over 400rwhp... And be wallet friendly vs. a blower

Re: Looking to maggie my lq4,need advice.

You'll need a GTO kit with a few minor changes in order to use the F-body accessories. Call Magnacharger and they'll tell you exactly what you need with part numbers. I looked into this last year and it runs about $7K for the 2300 kit. I skipped it and just did a stroker motor instead.

Re: Looking to maggie my lq4,need advice.

2300 vote. A LOT of guys run those in the 600 whp range and say great things. Above that power level it gets painful with belts and upgrading to bigger rib systems etc. the 2300 is what comes on the ZR1 and its not the most radical set up and GM wouldnt use it if it caused problems with efficiency ( epa? ) or reliability. Im a fan of using a bigger sys for less demand than a smaller system for peak demand as well.

In the end the difference between most of these set ups is all in the tune in which case your connected to one of the best locally. Call Arun and he'll try to talk you into a centri btw but regardless get him to tune it and you'll be happy with whatever set up you run

I wouldnt run an MP btw they are LOUD

Re: Looking to maggie my lq4,need advice.

Well I thank you all for your advice and I had thought about upgrading to 243 heads and exhaust work aswell but I had an unfortunate electrical fire in the car last night and the passenger side dash went up in flames. The interior is pretty toasty now..started cracking the windshield and ttop as the doors and windows were up and I was inside the house asleep.

So Ill be out of the thirdgen game for awhile as I figure what to do about my situation.Moral of the story is..when using an external harddrive and using an extension cord from the garage to the car to transfer files from the carputer.Dont fall asleep on the couch because sometimes you dont quite hear a rainstorm come through to short the extension cord and hard drive which was then plugged into the pc that also makes big flames inside the dash The car still starts though even with a melted..charred ecm in the passenger kick panel but I cant trust it or the harness is in bad shape there aswell.

Don't give up yet! Repair it. As long as you can live with a smokey interior smell. Sucks to see it charred like that.

Part of me wants to but..part of me also saying enough is enough..someone else might enjoy this setup in their ride and swap it out.Might be time for a new build or fine another clean thirdgen and be stock.

Wow that really sucks man, sorry to see that. I think you should pull the motor/trans, and part out everything from the car you can that's salvageable. Then find yourself another clean thirdgen, and swap in your motor and trans.

I used the LS1 GTO kit right out of the box. The only changes I made were fuel line routings and I opted for the 92MM TB. I got the kit from Hendrix Engineering who was a pleasure to deal with and beat everybody's price on the kit.

Haha....Thanks. The car is actually much quieter now. I took off the GMMG exhaust and installed a stock catback. The car was just obnoxious under boost with the GMMG. Even the dyno operator said...you really should put in ear plugs before we do this last pull...lol.

They sound badass absolutely I didnt say they sounded bad, just loud. Cop issues are BAD up here man... Brutal in fact.

Anyways what a collosal bummer that it burnt up that REALLY is a shame and sucks. Id do what the others are saying but one exception. We all know how exhausting putting together a nice LS swap is so dont make hasty decisions now. This is a major set back and it might be best to simply leave the car alone for a few months and forget about it and then decide which by then? I would hope is get another car and swap your stuff over.
