Cammed ls1, safe to drive without tune?

I have a stock ls1 I'm building with a vengeance racing vindicator cam, stock head modification of dual springs/retainers, and hardened pushrods only. I'm just trying to get some knowledge here to make me less worried.

Is it safe to drive the car untuned without doing WOT or hard driving(light cruising only) for about an hour and 50 minutes to get to the tuning shop? I don't want to hurt the engine.

Yes you can, the driveability won't be great at all and you won't want to do any WOT pulls but you'll be fine. Also, swap the Injectors out (if you have any) at the tuner's shop so you won't run too rich on the way there.

You mean change the injectors beforehand and then drive it to the shop?

No, what he's saying is drive it to the shop with the original injectors, swap to the new injectors at the shop, and then have them tune to the injectors you're going to run.

Ok that makes more sense now.

Wouldn't be surprised if your tuner puts a fresh set of plugs in either. Keep it easy and you'll be ok.

Re: Cammed ls1, safe to drive without tune?

Unrelated question to my previous,

The car has 305 carb hard lines, are they ok to use with a-n fittings?

I have the impression that using a high pressure external pump near the tank would supply adequate fuel to the engine, regardless of the line size?

The hard portion of the carb lines are fine. The rubber parts will only handle return, not supply pressure.

I put an EFI pickup with Walbro 255 in my carb tank, ran line with flared fittings to a Vette filter in the normal 3rd gen location, then picked up the factory carb line again up to the engine. My car was originally V6, so the line went up to the driver side of the engine.

I'd keep the line size at least 3/8" for the supply.

This is probably the closest, and no photos:

So the efi pickup/walbro 255 was a direct fit in the carb tank?

Into the tank, yes, although the carb'd tank doesn't have the baffles that the EFI tanks had. Hasn't seemed to cause any issues.

As for the wiring, no, that wasn't "direct fit". I spliced the EFI pickup wires for the fuel gauge into the factory chassis harness, and ran new wires for the fuel pump.

awesome, I'm gonna go with that setup then. Hopefully I don't encounter any issues either.

Just FYI, if you are using your stock carb fuel sender, you will need to trim the pickup tube a couple inches to fit the walbro pump.

If he does what I did, he'll be putting the Walbro pump into an EFI pickup assembly and installing that into the carb tank.

I drove a '99 C5 vette to the dyno when I installed a vortech supercharger and it still had a stock pump, spark plugs and fuel injectors. Of coarse like stated above no WOT pulls and you will be ok.

Thanks for the info,

but I'm gonna go with fiveseven's advice with the efi pickup and walbro.

Was it cammed? Mine has 240/244 .605/.596 and 112 LSA. I hope it doesn't stall out everytime I come to a complete stop on the way there.

Re: Cammed ls1, safe to drive without tune?

I went frm bone stock ls1 to a lq4 with cam and intake,it ran on the stock tune for 3 weeks daily without issue..but did stall at stoplights depressing the clutch.Right now im driving mine untuned again after doing a head swap on the lq4,went from 317 head(9.6:1) to milled 243 heads(10.6:1) and it runs good but stalls again at a stop.Just take it easy and do as suggested before.Change oil etc at the tuner..it will be worth it feeling how it drives now vs tuned is night and day.

five7kid, which "efi" pickup did you use? I can't seem to find one.
