Re: Previous GN engine now 427LSX/98mm turbo
After calling around and searching I found a place closer to me for the Rear end setup. Taking the car up there this week and dropping it off. (if no snow I'll just drive it up.)
Fab9/Spool/anti-roll bar/Torque Arm/Lower arms double adjustable shocks/adjustable springs. Back to a stock style suspension car again. I can finally get into those classes now.
I'll let you know how it turns out!

Your car is gonna fly.... You already went 147 on 11 psi basically.... I went 137 on 12 with few issues but i dont see it going better than 140 if i could have shifted higher. I only made your wastegate power at like 16 psi. Took me 24 to get over a 1000. I expect 160 mph out of it but you'll have a ton of power on 20+ pounds

Thanks Orr.....
I plan on just setting it up to run 8.50's this year. Be a mix of 93 and race fuel on I'm guessing 18-20psi.
I think between the suspension getting done... the launch control stuff and timing ect..
I can get the 60's down in the 1.2-1.3area It'll help my ET a bunch.
Hoping everything holds up to that... I'm told it will... and several guys running in those areas with the same stuff I have with no failure... so (Fingers crossed) Hope so!
The first NMCA Event in in April in FL so I'm hoping to get down to that.... like to run all the NMCA True Street events and also Drag Week and a few other small heads up class style events... Might not drive it down to Florida.. but I just might....
Hope your car is up and going this year dude!

Mine is finally together and hoping for 8.5's as well on full power. Check the poweradder board the vid is there. May need to add meth kit for alittle more safety. But car is not going to be legal for the times so i will only get one shot at it. Lol
You should easily get there on less than 20 lbs. 147 mph with a real launch is already 9.0's.

I have to admit, I'm a little sad to see the Buick 6 gone, as it was my inspiration to do my gn swap. But the new set up looks very promising, and I look forward to seeing how it progresses. What compression ratio are you running on the new setup?

It's a 9.5-1 Engine Neil..... I will miss the little V6 too but it's down in the Mustang "Bustang" and It's around all summer and I drive it quite a bit. (As on Drag Week this year)
So it's not all gone per say...
I took the Camaro up to "Trick Chassis" In WI on Saturday... It's getting a Fab9/CM Torque arm, Spool, Shocks/springs Anti Roll bar ect so it'll be able to use the launch power of the new engine/transmission.
Should have it back here after the first of the year and begin my list of stuff.
Hope to make a 8.90 pass right out of the box next spring!
What all cage/chassis work do you need to do before your Certified to 8.50 Orr?
I purchased the extention to my cage to go 7.49 but need to wait a year before installing as Super Street Small Block Power Adder on Drag Week won't have a car cert. for faster than 8.49 in that class... Need to do that a year before going up in class/speed.... Plus I need to get use to that kind of whip.

I'll have to check the nhra book on this one but the full basic cage plus chute, plus window net and i believe firejacket and nhra license are required for anything faster than 9.99 to 8.50. Maybe some other small items. Kill switch, sfi spec stuff on motor, trans shield, etc

A roll bar (Not continuing on above you to front window) will take you to 10.0
Full cage (above you down to front window) will go 8.49
Add the funny car part and X the doors your at 7.49 (Both mild steel)
Anything faster than that is full Moly.
I'm hoping to not have net on mine this year if I can get away with it.. but If I have to I will... I have everything else but current licence is out of date. Have to re-new in spring... physical ect...
Now the newer cars I think 2008up that still have factory safty devices working will allow you to go 10.00 with no bar... Just stinks for us old guys.

That should take you to 10.0 which you'll be below that with no problem... Ah big decision time.. unless you have a lax track that lets things slide...
The cage is a pain to a extent but if your going to the track and doing events the car has to be certified for XXX ET or your out.. can't run
So I've got to comply to all the rules....
Saftey is a pain but it is there for a reason... and with the MPH I'd rather be safe than sorry!

We shall see. I never expected to go better than 10.0's when i had the bar installed or else i would have gone the extra mile and had it all done. I really dont want to cut my dash up. I really dont want to tear inside apart after finally getting the car together and running again. I will enjoy it for now and see what happens next year. I am sure one pass and done for the year type treatment so maybe i'll run 1/8 and let off haha coast 10.0's

^ Thats the real pain of it isnt it? Sometimes you have a car thats just too nice to hack a cage into, or perhaps its just too painful to climb into them for street use like a 25. or the like.
For a street/drag build I think its 8pt + is about as far as you can go sensibly. The + is little reinforcing tricks that we can do to make the chassis better/safer without being overly cumbersome. I like how the nice cages are always tied into the "frame connectors" or floor cage components. The dash bar is a worthy addition if you can fit it in there. Ive seen some tucked RIGHT up to the firewall that didnt seem to impede the heater ducts and the like before. Can always add another crossover bar on the top hoop and gusset the corners in etc. to make them better and safer. Mind you I dont think those mods will make much difference to tech inspectors in terms of the 8.5 cap

Re: Previous GN engine now 427LSX/98mm turbo
Exactly i just dont want to go that far with this car and why i would consider buying someones drag roller to apply my motor power to and returning this car to more sensible street duty but that will never happen. Lol
My only shot may come at track rentals if they allow me to make a glory pass or 3
Theres a fine line to cross when it comes to these builds. They either remain street car and never see the track or you become race spec and go to track. Its hard if not impossible to enjoy the full potential on the street, let alone the legality and risks. My opinion is i have enough safety equip for 8's even tho nhra dont agree. I sign the waver goin into the track acknowledging the risk in racing, why limit me in speed? Let me run single and not against someone if safety is a concern, let me be the only one at risk

I agree completly....
If a street car drove there with out a trailer... pays for plates and insurance why would it not be safer on a track with medical staff there and no cross traffic?
I've said that for years...
Then you have guy's like Oklahoma that trailer their "Street Cars" to a obscure location and race on the street... With cars that are really not driven much on the street.
I guess everyone has their definition of "Street" I get that too.
I'd rather be at a track when really getting down on somthing that runs faster than 11's really.
I was guilty of street raceing back in the day but I wasn't going 9's either....
I drive the crud out of my car... now with the 4L80E it's even better.
Makes me want to put one in the Bustang(my old V6 in a Mustang) I bet I could pull almost 30mpg if I had a lock up converter and OD!
You'll be deep in the 10s or better with no problem.
Can't wait for this coming race season!!!!!

Just finished installing a Strange Eng. large front bearing housing,
Then removed the Detroit Locker (35spline)
Installed a Light Weight 40spline spool.
The Fab 9 is almost finished.
I'll have more pic's as the Long Moly Torque Arm is completed and adjustable lowers/Anti Roll bar!
Special thanks to Trick Chassis! They have great products for our
3'd and 4th gen Camaro/Firebirds!

It should hold For you.... What I'm doing is honestly OverKill ... But when your on Drag Week and can't be breaking parts it's worth putting it stuff that just should not break.
The last thing anyone on Drag week wants to do is be wrenching on your stuff... Especially big hard parts like transmissions and rear ends.
Seen many guy's have that trouble last year... sometimes twice!
Hopefully this will put a end to my mental worries on using the transbrake.
I've never used it with the V6 or LS yet!

40 spline? If you break that thing you bought faulty parts, 40 spline is enough for sub 6 second et's... RELIABLY lmao!!!!
But Drag week is a killer test... for sure, and you cant have too much mighty mighty and by the looks of this build? I'd be very surprised to see a mechanical failure.

Re: Previous GN engine now 427LSX/98mm turbo
Thanks Cam..... I'm trying to make it bullet proof... I've learned from the last two DragWeek's I've been on NEVER to plan on it being a smooth trip.
I had a camshaft sensor gear (Like a dizzy gear) that drives the oil pump almost sheer off in 2009. With luick I was close enough to my Machiene shop in OH that he could run me down a new set of gears... I installed them in the parking lot at the Motel and got back on the road 4hrs to the Final track and finished Drag Week.
This past year in the Bustang (My old engine in a Mustang) I have a matched set of gearts in that area now that don't have any problems.... Drove 1200mi in 4 days with zero issues... But the guys I was hang'n out with had TONS of problems. It took all of us to keep his car going all week.
I'm trying to drive mine and race it enough to know or at least find out where my weak points are. And find what parts are avalable at parts stores that are commonly avalable.
If there are parts that are not avalable anywhere.. they need to be taken with you as back up. Or you'll be Out of luck on the road with no way of getting back going.
Pre-planning for the worst is the best way to make it all week.

Hey Scott-
Great car. Not sure an LS will do the same, but I ran a 50/50 street/ race mix on a race Suzuki with a shaved head (had to cut it to get it flat). Took it apart (for another reason) and found it was detonating-even though I never heard it. Ran 50/50 unleaded race/ 110 race gas after that. Straight unleaded race fuel left a sticky residue everywhere.

With the mild tune up in it now with only 12.5deg of timing and 11.5AFR's and hitting 147mph with 11-12psi of max boost and leaving soft I think there's a 8.9- in the car with just 93pump gas and a proper launch.
Holley has a pretty bitchin Water/Meth injection setup I'm looking at that is controlled by the Holley Dominator ECM that I have. Since it also controls boost I think it's safe.
If the Meth does not spray... It will drop boost back down to 11psi (Or what ever you set it at)
I can run just regular 93 and spray water/Meth and get to 8.50's this year I'd be pretty happy. Much past that I'll need to run race fuel.
I have much more tuning and stuff to go I'm at the very begining of the entire setup being dialed in... Rear end is just about finished!

Your motor probably would handle another few psi on straight pump easily and be a 150's mph car. Thats what i hope to see on pump gas alone. I'll mix race c16 or just spray tons of meth come hot summer as my iats will be too high for high boost on gas
That rear looks awesome! Huge! I dont think my dual 3" over axle would fit, i run both down stock location and its tight with 12 bolt

I'll be picking the car up Saturday.... I have to re-make a lot of my exhaust. It'll be almost the same as it was... just have to re-route it some.... I'll take some pictures when it's up on the hoist for that.
I have a 2010 Camaro cast iron manifold on the drivers side (Facing forward)
On the passenger side it's a truck Manifold (Facting forward).. they merge and meet
to a T-6 Flange before going up into the turbo.
I'll post pic's of that ASAP.
Thanks!

Re: Previous GN engine now 427LSX/98mm turbo
i wonder if these work work after reworking the angle of how they dump, by the time i find some mismatched manifolds and messing with those these may be easier? thoughts?

Honestly the Cast Iron holdls the heat in better and from everyone I've talked to makes about 100hp more than a header... (Heat loss)
Plus headers leak easier... the Iron is much more stable of a metal for heat cycles.
My car pick up got delayed... Hope for next weekend!

Thanks again to Alex at www.TrickChassis.com for doing some great work on the rear end set up... This will allow the car to really put the power down!

Re: Previous GN engine now 427LSX/98mm turbo
Not had much time to play on the internet and forums... Sorry...
Update from this year... Didn't do much until close to Drag Week.
Had a successfull Drag Week dependability wise... but went with warn out tires and kept
spinning every launch and having to let out. Car went 9.0@165mph was my best.
Ended up 3'd in the Heads up Shoot Out at the end of the week... very fun!
A few weeks ago went to the LSX World Finals in Indy.... Entered the "True Street" Class
which is 30mi cruse and 3 back to back passes with no hood opening ect.
Finished 2nd place!
Have some things to do this winter to help my 60' times come around and then Add to
the cage to take it down to 7.49... and re-licence...
Here's a couple videos and pictures!

Re: Previous GN engine now 427LSX/98mm turbo
Had a track rental at US 131 where I could dial in the 60' which has been awful... 1.58 best...
So slowly went up on the rev limit till it went 1.41... Had a mix of 93/few gall of 110 in it... 15lbs Down the track... Went 8.70 with that 1.41 60'
Felt really good till about 30mi from home...kept going in/out of gear... Limped it home barely...
Had a shop help figure out the pump went bad... Put a new pump in... Drove ok... Never tested... Went to drag week and broke the pump on first pass.
Took it apart... Pump was under warranty... Put it back in Friday... Seemed ok... Tried the brake and now it acts like it's in gear all the time.... Can drive in neutral lol... Reverse is screwed up...
So it'll have to come out again... Converter back to pro/torque and Trans back to Rossler...
New cooler ect.
Working on a pump solution since most guys hurt the pump on the 80E in this power range.
Had 8000mi on it and many 9-8sec passes...
Didn't get to turn it up at all...
Glad yours is doing great!!!!
Talk to you soon,
Scott

Re: Previous GN engine now 427LSX/98mm turbo
Update........ Had a set of billet steel gears made for the pump.... if they work for me this year and the trans/pump holds up the gears will be able to be purchased through Rossler Racing Transmissions.
I will be driving and testing them in my car.
May be trying a different cam as well... unsure on that yet.
Picked up some double adjustable front struts from Derek (From Street Outlawas) as his car is full tube chassis now...
Hope to go pick up the transmission/converter from Rossler in the next few weeks and if the weather is decent enough drive it daily..... I'm putting a pressure sensor in the transmission so I can monitor/datalog the pressure.... When it's fresh and then also down the track so I will know if there is a potential problem with it.
Wish me luck!

Re: Previous GN engine now 427LSX/98mm turbo
Had a really good year with the car!
Made it through Drag Week with a 8.6 Avarage ended up 4th out of over 40cars in my class. Missed 3rd place by .003 sec Lol...
Just went down to Muncie Drag Way for the Heads up Shoot out... Set two personal bests back to back 8.20@167mph with a 1.28 60' 5.2 in the 1/8th.
Time to upgrade the cage to 7.50cert this winter and click into the 7's!
