balance stock rotating assembly

Do you need to have the rotating assembly balanced if you are using stock parts? Same parts that came with the motor? Im going to get the crank checked and polished but didnt know if i need to get the assembly balanced as well.

Re: balance stock rotating assembly

If you are putting the same pistons, with the same rods, in the same bores...then I dont really see a NEED to do it. I didnt do it, and I even replaced the crank with a reman unit...which was said to be balanced on its own. I weighed my piston/rod assemblies and found them all to be just about the same, so slapped it together.

BUT...I would check with the shop to see how much extra it is. If we're talking a few bucks (within reason), maybe do it to be safe. Usually, if a shop is doing some work for you, lumping other services in isnt a big deal.

Some other things I would consider (no idea what your build goal, skillset, or budget are)...
- block hot tank. you'll start with a totally clean block, ready for paint and parts..its already apart anyway.
- new cam bearings. cheap insurance and you'll need it after the hot tank. its the first thing installed into a bare block, so not as easy to replace after its assembled.
- deck resurface if it needs it
- main rod bore check/resize if running different bolts. i didnt do this, and many dont...but do some reading on it.

But if youre just doing a quick budget build, get the crank checked and polished up, new bearings, check the clearances and run it!

Yep, got all of that done already. I was going to weigh the pistons and rods to see where they are at. Balance will be about 230 after tax. I figured since i was using stock parts i would be fine but i wanted to double check. I will be doing the motor myself. Just going to be a heads and cam car while i build the stroker (that will be balanced).
