LS Swap into Carbed 84 Trans Am Gas Tank?

Ok, I haven't been able to really get a a straight answer, I understand alot of poeple swap in the 4th gen tank, but can I use my stock tank from my 84 which the car was originally carbed? I've heard you can put the tpi sending unit in it and then get the TPI fuel lines with a better fuel pump of course?

if it matters, I'm building a H/C/I 5.3 aiming for 450hp +

Please advise, thank you

I heard the same thing from the guy at Hawks. I didn't do that because I had a donor car so I used the 4th gen tank.

I think Hawks is pretty reliable for info on thirdgens. He's built one or two.

You can run your stock tank. YOu'll just need the WIX corvette regulator and retrofit an in-tank pump. Get a sending unit from a TPI car and swap it in place of your carbed one and get a wahlboro 255lph pump to replace the TPI pump. you will also need to modify the fuel lines a bit to accept high pressure fittings. Either using -AN compression fittings or cutting and flaring the existing line with high pressure fittings.

That's exactly what I did in my '82 originally-carb'd car. I used both cut & flare and compression fittings. It was a V6 car from the factory, so the fuel line went up the left fuel rail in the engine compartment. I used Russel fittings to connect to the Vette filter/reg that had AN flares on the other end.

Using the EFI pickup in the tank will require some wiring mods, as the connectors and routing were different between carb and EFI cars.

I just repinned mine at the connector for what I needed. 8 years later and still running strong.

Need to add power and ground for the pump. The original-carb harness will only have the fuel level wires.

Yes, using a painless fuel relay kit. I had the helper pump installed already so I had power going in already. Just had to swap car side wires with relay wiring for pump power . Still able to use factory wiring this way (sort of).

A while back, I posted GM's instructions for installing their ZZ4 engine. The ZZ4 required more fuel than the stock helper pump could provide. So, fuel pump upgrade how-to is included.
