The official gen 3 killer here *video*

With soo much going on lately with personal health issues I got anxious to head out for the opening day at the track and see what the car would run.The car feels totally different with the roll cage, sfcs and fresh nittos outback.

Long story short..I buttoned the car up and did some street testing sat night. Now before everyone kills me..the audio in the vids suck.Im having issues with the mic so don't bark up my tree.

The next morning went from a very nice scenic drive...to 1 pass wonder. This is lq4 #3 Ive pushed too hard.I got greedy with boost and meth thinking it wold hold over 700whp for the full 1/4.

I'm pretty sure from looking at the video a few times about half track it appears I started losing oil pressure and at 3/4 track or so the motor shut off.I think I spun a bearing and then maybe the rods bent or lifter failed.Im hoping to maybe pull the motor in a week or so and see what was the failure point. But I had the boost and meth up past the point of what it was tuned safely on.I will say the car was moving.I came out soft(stock diff) spun 1st,bit of 2nd,chirpped 3rd,hooked 4th and then bam.

So Ive already prepped to either take the motor apart and throw in gen 4 rods/pistons,new bearings, lifters and hopefully the block isn't hurt. The oil looks mint..no material,no window in the block..but sounds like marbles when you start it. Tie will tell how bad things are lol

Slab in a new "disposable" 5.3 and turn that 6.0 into a low compression 402. Just saying.........

My opinion --> Just back it off to safe level and have endless fun.

Don't mean to start a rumor, but a co-worker told me that Gen V (LT1) rods fit the LS1 and are stronger than anything put in an LS engine. That would be a cheap rod upgrade. Buy a set of forged pistons and you're in business.

Also, truck blocks don't have the windows between the main crank bays, which causes more issues with oil drain back and aeration. Wondering if your problem is oil supply & quality more than strength of materials.

Just brainstorming.... I wonder if you could find an LS7 rotating assembly and drop it in your engine with forged pistons to spec? That would give you a 4" stroke forged crank, lightweight titanium rods.... and possibly ability to accommodate LS7 dry sump.

I've see LS3 guys using the LS7 crank and rods.

Re: The official gen 3 killer here *video*

Thanks for the tips,I have heard of people running gen5 stuff in ls motors with good results. For now Im going to just tear this block down and make sure the block and heads didnt take on damage.I already have gen4 rods and hyperutectic pistons, just keeping in the tight budget to have it running.

I agree I need to turn it down a touch and it would survive under my abuse for a long time.I think I have 14lb spring in the wastegate and maybe i should switch that back to 7 and use the boost controller do more work to limit the power ...and maybe dial back the meth ramping in.meth is addicting to play with i cant lie! When it kicks on ..the turbo itself zings up and its a slap in the face as the car shoots forward..or blazes the tires again.needing more power isnt my issue now, making things last is where i need to focus on.the car is getting there bit by bit every yr.

What was the 1/8th mile time?

Bummer but at least parts aren't too expensive. Do you know what timing you were running at full boost?

I keep reading that the gen 4 5.3s with thicker walls are best for 700+ rwhp. I'm looking to make 800-900ish on my next engine.

Sadly at that time in the morning they were having issues with printing slips.I had to go into the tower and ask what my times were. All they had was that I crossed around 128mph and hit 10.9 or 11.1s.They said i was motoring along ..and then looked like i let off to keep my times down.

On my tech car I lied about the specs.I wrote that it made 450hp on borrowed time 1986 355 sbc with open headers.

Re: The official gen 3 killer here *video*

*Update*

The motor is out and the verdict is in.New block!

First off I will say its truly amazing the buse these cylinder walls can take. This was a much higher mileage motor than my previous lq4 but the main reason Im not going to put fresh parts in it is because the crank itself got chewed up slightly on 7 & 8 from chunks of pistons..ringlands and connecting rod. Plus #8 cylinder at the very bottom tip of the bored had a chunk broken off.Would it affect anything..most likely not but i wasnt going to chance it.

So I pulled my engine out from last year that i was in a rush to get up and running..didnt open it up..just swapped in another junker. This block was mint! All the bearings were in spec etc. When i tore it down I found what my failure was.#8 bent a rod and a lifter failed. So Im going to put my gen 4 parts in this block..replace all the bearings anwyays, gap the rings for boost this time and put it back in the car. Look at the pics,I died laughing when i pulled the pan and #8 dropped down. Really glad my old motor wasnt as bad as I though and can be put to use.Gave it a quick cylinder cross hatch clean, fresh paint.

Heres the vid of some of the progress back shes pretty much good to go. Ive been driving around both the Srt-10 and the S5 having fun so why not record some of that to curb my itch for the boosted car.

Re: The official gen 3 killer here *video*

So its been a bitter sweet week. The car got fired up last week and I gingerly spent a few hours per night driving the car around breaking it in.3.5 tanks of gas later I started to feed some boost into her.7-10psi and she was loving it..felt and sounded stronger than it ever did.Throttle was just soo crispy..I was loving it too.Scheduled a dyno date for Friday to do a quick retune..and get some hard figures before changing things up since I got a new opportunity for some product testing for a direct side by side..same dyno facts.Ill touch more on that when the chance becomes reality because...

The new pistons already **** the bed!Tuesday I did a good hwy cruise for 3 hrs.Stopped to take a break, grab a coffee and let the car cool down for a moment. After a few laughs with locals at the coffeeshop..I headed home, along my route is a very long empty straight road over a mile long.Well i said its all green to go right now.I coasted 1st,rolled into 2nd at 3/4 pedal, rolled into 3rd and went about 85% throttle before I lifted.I lifted for 2 reasons. A)..the car felt like it was way faster than i remember..I chickened out. B) just before I lifted..I kinda felt the car nose over on power.

Once i started coasting my speed down..both my catchcans completely smoke with raw oil coming out the top filters.Luckily i was 3 blocks away from home but I know that moment it broke the piston rings. So she will be under the knife again..this time im dropping the piggy bank on forged internals

Enjoy the video

Re: The official gen 3 killer here *video*

Well its been about a week and my new parts arrived.

I was looking around at big name companies for forged stuff to replace the stock gen 4 pistons/rods I just broke the ringlands on. In my search I stumbled on DssRacing. I looked at alot of their history since they are namely Ford gurus for engine parts and recently got into the lsx game a few yrs back. Prices seem on par with others for their budget forgings. I liked the design of their pistons and decided since not many ls guys have reported on them..Ill be the test pilot.

I placed my order for the X-groove pistons and I beam rods and opted for the steel moly rings. The next morning I receive a call from Tomm who I believe is the owner, calling to confirm my order in detail for my application and power goals.Thats service,He kept in touch with me as the pistons were made to order

As crappy my situation is to have to tear the motor down so soon,Im excited to put these parts in because they look and feel amazing. the rods are eagles with arp bolts also. Take a look,so far..I recommend Dssracing based on the customer service Ive already received.

DSS makes a good piston for the price. They have been in the game for a few years now. Any idea what they weigh? You decide on a crank yet?

Still using the stock crank, just had everything checked and balance.I didnt get it weighed prior to give you an idea but they did feel heavier than the stock gen 4 pistons. I should ave the car back up by monday and Ill show where the cheap gen stuff failed on me.Luckily there was no other damage.

I love your car. Not solely because it makes good power but because you built it, you drive it. Not a show pony and not a race car. You break it? So what, you fix it again. It's great, keep it going.
