Transmission Cross Member for 82 Camaro Sport Coupe

Hey everyone,

I'm deep into research mode for my Camaro. Currently it's rockin' a 2.8 v6 with the Saginaw 4-spd. I'm still deciding on what engine to use (gen1, 2, 3?) and what transmission.

Going manual will require a hydraulic clutch to be retrofitted to the car since it's using the mechanical clutch linkage currently. Automatic requires tunnel modifications for the shifter cables.

What I'm really struggling to find out definitively is about the transmission cross member (T56 or 4L60E). Being an 82 car, the existing (stock) transmission is shorter than the 700r4 or T5 units, meaning that my cross member is a little more towards the front then others. I've read some threads where the standard cross members for LS conversions don't mount up to an 82 because of this.

Does anyone know the proper cross member to use for an 82? A lot of sites say "82-92 T56 Cross Member" but I'm not convinced just yet and others say 83-92 specifically because of this. I've yet to find an 82 only one listed anywhere.

TIA
Mike
