LTX and LSXPutting LT1s, LS1s, and their variants into Third Gens is becoming more popular. This board is for those who are doing and have done the swaps so they can discuss all of their technical aspects including repairs, swap info, and performance upgrades.
My friend gave me 1 of his 5.3 block that was sitting on his shop floor without an oil pan for a 1.5yrs
. Is it worth saving as in cleaning up the bottom end. Putting on oil pan on and starting up.
It's going to be tough to get it cleaned out. If he'd only have covered it with a trash bag.......................
As far as whether or not it's worth saving, you're the only person in a position to answer that question. If you were planning an LS swap anyway, you might be able to find a junkyard pan and get this engine running for minimal $$$ outlay. And if it proves to have been pooched, you'll already have all the swap work done, and can drop-in another known-good LS with minimal problems.
Ironwill's spot on. Also, I think you'd be better off skipping it and just getting your own 5.3 pulled from the yard. Getting that properly cleaned and reassembled, unless you do it all yourself, will cost more than a junkyard pullout with more parts attached and less risk.
