Starting MY 4.8 LR4 swap

Hey everyone been away for a very long time was in the fiero game field had a sick 3800sc 4 speed fiero that got totaled but enough about that I have a 1988 gta Trans am and I’m starting my 4.8 LR4 swap on. It will be getting a t56 behind it to since I have that sitting off towards the side in the corner of the garage. So my 4.8 I’m looking to do stock truck intake shaved, now I’m wondering can the oil pan, pick up tube, and dip stick be bought off rock auto. Instead of going through summit or Walter Racecraft. Since it will come out cheaper? I saw for the truck windage tray it can be used with the LS oil pan as long as I cut the front section off so I’ll save cost there which is great.

The 4.8 has only 82,000 miles on it I got with all accessories except flexplate since going T56, exhaust manifolds, and no throttle body Which was a drive by wire anyway. It came out of a 05 1500 Silverado so I think I’ll need to find a cable driven one from a 02-03 4.8-5.3 or can the 98-02 f body throttle body bolt up to a truck intake? I plan on running truck accessories on the front since I have a 98-02 style ram air hood for my car so it the alternator bracket will clear. Not running ac and using stock K member so I don’t think I have to notch that hopefully don’t?

Another question I have will a BTR stage 3 cam work well with this 4.8 head number are 706 I have cam bearings, hardened push rods, lifters and beehive springs to go with the cam also doing the trunion upgrade on the rockers I know stock rockers will work fine with this cam and head combo. plan on putting new head gaskets on the motor too with intake gaskets blah blah blah I plan on using my 350 motor mounts and clam shells and motor mount brackets off my 355 hsr build I had so I’m good there I also have ICT ADAPTER PLATES READY

Re: Starting MY 4.8 LR4 swap

That cam will "work". I am using my factory hood and everything clears with truck accessories and intake. F-body LS1 oil pan fitment is ok, notching or hammering K member will help clearance. I would be more than willing to give some guidance if you PM me as there are thousands of LS swap threads already on this site.

yea I have a 98-02 ram air hood style so not worried about hood clearance at all cause I know it will clear with that. So picked up cam today and ordered all the parts for the motor here are pics going to pm you too on this for some more parts guidance if that’s ok ✅

That's a ballsy move, posting your home address like that.
But I wish you well; I'm stuck in a 4.8 swap myself.

hmmmm good question I would have to see the cam card. I do know it’s for 4.8-6.0 truck motor. I got it off my buddy he never installed it into his ls jeep Cherokee he was doing he went a different route and put a stock 6.0 in his so he offered me this cam for cheap money

the springs came with the cam it’s a set of bee hive springs. My machinist told me they should work out fine. I’m having trouble finding cam lifters though would you know the part number by chance for a set?

dang lifters aren’t cheap through there 🤦‍♂️ Was wondering if someone can send links to lifters but at a lower price want to use this as a lost resort. I saw that O’Reilly sells a set of 8 for 33-40 bucks in AC DELCO BRAND might go this route if possible I just need to see how they look or if the part number can be cross referenced to btr’s

Re: Starting MY 4.8 LR4 swap

With lifters, the saying of you get what you pay for is pretty true especially with the price increases lately. AC Delco branded doesn't mean a thing these days. Lifter quality seems to be tougher to come come by in recent years. I recommend purchasing from a company that will stand behind their products and pay the price. Cheap out on lifters and the price is much higher

Re: Starting MY 4.8 LR4 swap

You might be better off keeping the old stock lifters over buying new inexpensive lifters. The stock stuff was much higher quality than replacements being made today. It's unfortunate, but these days it seems like you've got to spend some coin to get decent lifters that won't ruin your engine.

Re: Starting MY 4.8 LR4 swap

I listed those lifters cause of this being a budget build with low hp and low engine rpm of the truck cam should peak around 6,000

ok so I may have found a set for around 200 bucks. I found these on a 3800 forum page that 3800sc guys are running in their 3800sc Fieros with zzp cams. They specs say they work with LS1, LS2, LS3, and LS7 which the 4.8 uses LS7 replacement lifters anyway what are your idea on these everyone. The reviews on them people say they work great

Re: Starting MY 4.8 LR4 swap

So update for everyone called summit today and they got me for 555.00 lol everything is ordered I also picked up my buddies extra set of speed engineering headers he sold to me for 200 bucks 🤘😁🤘

I can finally get this in the engine bay once the machinist finishes putting it all together for me. What would be the next steps from here? I’m going to be running a truck intake I’m gonna attempt to shave it myself let’s hope it turns out fine.
