Here is a rear quater shot of an 82 Z28 from the sales borchure. I think all the 82 Z28s had the silver colored GXF regardless of the body color. Seems to me it was silver to contrast a bit with the body color.
With yours painted the same as the body color, they don't stand out. And the grass does a good job of hiding them
The accent stripe across the rear bumper was 1 - 1/2 inches high in 1982. The accent stripe in 82 was color coordinated with the interior color of the car. I have a maroon interior and the stripes on my car are red, orange, and black.

Re: Z28 gfx stripe
Didnt they also come single colored with a single stripe (about 1/2 inch wide) around the body at the exact GFX break?

Re: Z28 gfx stripe
Mikz86TA....I think the single gold/silver stripe was for 1985 and later years.. but I am no expert on this subject

Here is one link to one vendor
http://www.stencilsandstripes.com/index.asp
Here is a link to a second vendor with 82-84 Z28 stripes.....
http://www.phoenixgraphix.com/gm/8284z.htm
This link has a better rendition of the picture I posted above, and a Metallic Blue 82Z28 with the strips and silver GFX...and a top front view of a white 82 Z28 just like mine.....
You can see some comments on both vendors in the Aftermarket Vendor Forum in the "Stencils & Stripes" message thread.......
So on your wheel well cover maybe you have two left units, with one on the right side of the car??? Or it is installed incorrectly...one or more of the retainers have not been placed in the proper holes so teh unit does not line up with the outside of the fender
