Yup, not WD-40 but that thick-yellow stuff, PB-blaster I think. Coated the whole top of it 2-3 times. But once I got the last bolt out, it popped right off (literally, it fell down into the hole lol.) Had more trouble getting the valve cover off than it lol. (pics soon. smoke break)

Re: Havin fun this winter...

So.. gettin late.. still chuggin..

Ughblechk, What would be the best way to clean these rather than getting new heads? I'm stretching my budget thin as is..

So.. we all know that little black ball under the left side fender.. Would it be ok for me to put like.. (if I remeber correctly) "a little tuner fuel filter" on the line and/or one out the bottom of the round canister, then route the line from the charcoal canister into the line to the round canister?

Stupid AIR pump bolts were stuck in there good, almost stripped one but, I soaked them in the PB, grinded on them a bit to get em jarred, and they tweaked right out next try with the ratchet.

Which torx piece do I need to get the remaining bolts out of the accessory brackets and alt. bracket? I will most likely find the size tonight when I stop for the night but, wanted to ask anyway. x;

Gonna take the TB off tonight and be done for the night...

So this is why you always look before you put pressure into turning a nut..

Do I get to replace the whole fuel line or can I find this part somewhere? Off to summit/jegs..

Re: Havin fun this winter...

Wow ive never seen heads grimey like that before lol id say the best way to clean them is to take them to get professionaly shampooed its only like 40 dollars or something and it works the best but you might want to re-paint after if you have flaky paint on them right now. And maybe if you do it at a machine shop you can get them cnc ported

Re: Havin fun this winter...

looks like your having a ton of fun haha i wish i could be doing that right now i have to wait till summer before i can start doing that stuff. grrr.
anyways. i would take em in and get em cleaned like the last guy said.
and get em ported to abit. cant always go wrong there. and maybe get some new springs for them and maybe some good roller rockers and what not. should look nice and spiffy
how many kms are onthat engine? mine has just about 300,000kms on em and my heads wernt even close to that gummy.

and it looks like you broke a bolt or something.

Re: Havin fun this winter...

I should have edited like my other post, when I was wrenching the return line from the TBI, I had a rag on there from taking the intake line off and didn't notice that the nut I was trying to break didn't, but the one on top of it did and so I continued to wrench away and the line snapped and yeah..

Part of the return line is still in the connector, I hope I can just get it out, cut the line, and put it back on there, but if not, I wouldn't mind a braided setup, as I found a thread that shows a real nice setup.

It was driving on it with _a lot_ of blow-by that did it, and only 127k.
Kept ignoring it and putting it off because of other.. things.. cough.

Can't wait.. finally get a day off on sunday. Got a little thing at 1, but until then and after 3 I get to work alllll day on her.

Oh, just to let you know, the driver side manifold, near the firewall the bolt that is before the pipe that goes into the Y-pipe, theres a bloody tab on it that makes you want to stab things.

Also the brake booster bolt underneath the throttle, if its stuck, and you can't find a pair of gloves, and you tell yourself your prepared for the consequences, and then when it finally breaks loose..
Well let's just say I wasn't prepared. Lool.

Re: Havin fun this winter...

are you planning on getting a new intake manifold?? or just reuse the one that was on the 305 and clean it up?
since im doing a 383 swap. ill have a 305 laying arond. probably take it to the dump or give it away. but since your keeping your 305. you can probably take afew parts off of it that you need or anything.
its a TBI as well. the only problem with it is it needs a ring job on the pistions. oil get by pretty bad sometimes. only im keeping from it is probably the Starter and the Altenator and the belt setup. other then that. i dont think ill have any use for it. so pretty much a complete engine with out thos parts. if you list the part you need ill try to see what i can do.
oh i may be keeping the air cleaner setup as well. since i jsut bought that lol and i kinda like it. ill see what i have in store. im thinking of maybe getting a tunnel ram. if so its all yours. ill let you know. ill pretty much use whatever i can off taht engine for the 383 that i can use pretty much.

theres a photo of my engine somewhere on this thread. i think its on the 1st page.

Re: Havin fun this winter...

Awesome man. Yeah, I got it saved as well.
I will be cleaning up everything as I go, so I don't know if I will need anything from a 305 lol. I gotta get the shopping list I have done now before I think of anything else as well.
Mufflers should be here early next week woot..

On that note its 3 and I got work tomorrow, so peace out man.

While the TBI is out are you going to do the "ultimate" mods?

Re: Havin fun this winter...

They include..

-Grinding the ridge around the bores and porting them smoother
-putting spacers on the injectors
-grinding down the screws on the throttle blades and also grinding the edges of the blades sharper

I did these mods on my truck and they helped a little bit but they help more with the more hp you gain. Theres tons of stuff on doing these mods but if your staying with TBI they are an absolute must. better yet you could buy one of the holleys or ebay TBI's the holleys are expensive though check out ebay they have alot of aftermarket TBI units at good prices.
----------
BTW there are tons and tons of "ultimate" tbi posts out there and i might have missed a couple things

Sorry guys way ahead of you lol.
I have been planning on the TBI mods for weeks now.

Edit: Just need a good high-speed dremel bit to go at it.

Also, taking off the pass. side accessory bracket is a sfjsfs.
Stupid torx bolts are ALL rounding out.

Wow... I thought I thought it was bad when I looked at the heads lol

20+mins of twisting, pushing back'n'forth, and PB and I get this

Oh, could someone please tell me what this is? (White circle)

I have most of my other stuff marked in other pictures but it seems I removed whatever was to this before I started picturing-logging my adventure.

Well crap, I've got to where I have to undo the accessories to the head, and its torx heads which I know are just gonna strip.

Might have found my match for the night until I can get a high speed metal dremel bit.

Re: Havin fun this winter...

I feel you guys, I had to wait what seemed like forever to really dive in like this.
Creepingdeath: I didn't expect to have to go this far into the block when I first got it into the garage. Had the car the wrong way, plus no motor stand/picker.

It took me awhile to get used to the RS rims, but they have really grown on me and I really like them over any other wheel choice out there.
Took me a few tries to get what I liked, I started out with them completely blacked out, to a tiny polished lip, to what it is now. Eventually I will edge off the spokes, so it looks like spikes going up to the lip.

I want my mufflers.

Re: Havin fun this winter...

Sooo.
Started out kinda cloudy and sprinkley today, but turned out great.
Still waiting on my metal dremel bits, I started fabbing up my exhaust finally, (Pics of this soon~) and got to work on my adjustable fuel regulator.

Well here is what we start with, the yellow cup.

Drilling out the little metal tab was a little more than I thought it would be, don't be afraid to put some pressure on it. As soon as your through the tab the screw falls out.

Before:

After:

Check gaskets and everything, and now:

The tech article is kinda confusing on which way to mount it, I was thinking of putting the metal cup the screw was attached to upside down in the cup facing upside down and inside out to show the level. (lol)

Anyway, what it means is to turn the way the cup is positioned on the injector pod top piece around, so you can now see the tab and its location.

Don't forget to cut a small hole into the top of the screw head before putting it all back together so you can adjust it with a flathead screwdriver!

Time to go back outside..

Yeah they are mega long lol.
Got back from the store, and not a moment to soon! Came around the turn just a street from Wal-Mart and the-ex passes me going towards it.

I got all hyped up too because I saw the sexy pull-up of a third-gen in the dark and bam. -_-

Anyway, I got my blades and I got a 2gig SD stick so I can record more than 11 seconds now, woohoo!

Re: Havin fun this winter...

haha no kidding.
only thing i hate about shopping online is the stupid shipping costs. its like quarter of the cost of what you by sometimes its half. buy a $40 part. $20 for shipping. its like what?!?!
its so lame. thats one part i hate about shipping. unless you buy like over $500 worth of items then its free shipping. but only on some stores.
i think the limit i would be able to have was i think a $300 limit. im not to sure how much the limit for this one i just signed up.
but the cool thing is that i dont have to put a stamp on the envelope its prepaid! woot! i need a credit card bad. like bad!
i hate having no money. and plus a credit car will help out if your debet card fails.or you have no cash.
back up
i need to work up my credit

Hah, I try to stay as far away from credit cards as possible, I might be tempted to get another car... like a 350 iroc.. mm..

er.. anyway, got a couple of things done today:

Dremel'd off the edges of the TBI:

and.. remember how dirty the intake was?

Well after a little hard work..

Still cleaning it up too, its sitting in a bucket load of wd-40 for the night.
Hopefully tomorrow I can start dremeling accessory bracket bolts and start getting those heads off!!

Re: Havin fun this winter...

I will most likely polish it up, I want something shiny in the engine bay atleast lol. I will probably only keep it until this next winters projects, where I will upgrade to the edelbrock intake.

Re: Havin fun this winter...

gotta show the progress on that
im on my project right now giving my car a diet.
so far i think someone locally is wanting to buy my seats from my car.
im getting right of the back ones and the front ones and going to get some racing seats with the 5 point harness. and get a fibergass front end. with a fiberglass hood. also removing all the carpet. im going to put in a 6 point roll bar. and subframe connectors. that right there will add wieght but stiffing the car and protect be when im on the track
im thinking about getting some lexan windows but they are pretty expensive. so i might save that for another day. so far thats all i got for my plan so far. i wont get my car all done up this year so im jsut gunna gut it all out and hopefully get it all eady for next year.

Re: Havin fun this winter...

Instead of using the edelbrock TBI manifold you can by tbi to carb adapter plates and use almost any intake manifold you want.. i think jegs has them for sale they are really cheap like 40 dollars.

Re: Havin fun this winter...

Creepingdeath: I will consider that, thanks.
Josh: I wish I was brave enough to go with fiberglass on more than just the Hood, I just know as soon as I get done fiberglassing the front, I'll get into a wreck. I'll stick with the steel for now, but that front bumper cover might be able to be swapped...

So...
Tonight I have just been thinking of how to do the exhaust..
My original plan was to have an H-Pipe right after the mufflers, probably between the 2 pipes going over the axle. (Due to how my mufflers are made, It seemed to me the best place to put it, rather than before them.)

But now I have started reading, It seems an H-Pipe is really just to keep tone even, rather than being for performance. So I am going to try to fab an X system into my duals.

I will probably continue to do what I was doing from the mufflers-to the headers, and thats go around the subframes on both sides, then arc around and come at an angle into the mufflers, which connect directly to the X-Pipe, which connects to the over the axle piping.

This is gonna be really complicated but it is going to be really fun and that is why I am doing this.

Some pics of how it looks now:

All I have to say, is if I get this 350 IROC I am looking at, theres no way I am NOT using a regular 3inch cat-back all the way.

Re: Havin fun this winter...

So..
(lol yes it will always start out with that)

Was cuttin' bolts and exhaust piping today, came inside to get keys and take a smoke break and started looking on autotrader again, the 5.7 black iroc was sold by the time I talked to guy, I wanted to cry. ;(

Anyway, I found this guy on there:

But my main question for this post, does this engine bay look 31k, 131k, or 231k? I might have to just travel down there to look at it next week, if its still on AT (they said they are sending it to auction soon.. -_-)

Come on guys, I got 1000 views so I KNOW you guys are looking at my car.
I really want an opinion on the engine bay so I know what kind of deal I can start bargaining for. I would be buying this to be my new DD until my RS done, then I would start restoring it. (White is actually my second favorite color believe or not. )

Last:

VIN:1G1FP87FXFL******

Also, anyone know what the angle or degree a jegs/summit xpipe is at?
As in.. are the X's coming out 90* or 45* from the base if you point it straight towards the engine.
Ill make a diagram if you want haha, I gotta go to the store real quick.

Thats a damn nice iroc.. but what are your intentions to buy another one?
----------
BTW it looks like your rear end has a slow leak you might want to check her out she might be dry.

Re: Havin fun this winter...

Well, when I first got my RS, I was looking at the dealer add and it said that the IROC was an upgraded version of the car. etcetc
So being the idiot I am, I bought it thinking it was an IROC/RS. Hahaha.

Yeah, well, almost a year later and things have definitely changed. I really want an IROC, just for the names sake, and that they are starting to get hard to come by around my area. (All I ever see are RS..) I am going to restore it and most likely keep it completely stock. When the time comes, I will probably sell it to gain ground on a 69 'maro.
Right now that IROC sits at $2500, they listed it as a 5.7L but I caught the F in the VIN and sent an email regarding this.. also asked about RPO code, and smoke/etc.

Thanks, I will check that as soon as I can, I thought it was from when they installed the posi and just didnt clean it..

Speaking of that, that axle looks bloody ugly, can I just sand it down and paint it?

Re: Havin fun this winter...

Take it out and get it sandblasted and powder coated that would be your best bet. For budget i would just wire wheel it and coat it in engine paint or por-15 that approach would take a while though and im not sure it would look too good sanded. Then just get a new gasket and some new gear oil, you can actually raise your WHP with a good rear end gear oil too i saw them do it on a mustang with royal purple rearend oil and they gained like 3hp from it.
