Re: Steve's IROC Z

BACK FROM PAGE 6!
Its been almost 6 years to the day of my last post and the car is still not done, but I'm much further along. Body shop jail as I call it has been the biggest issue. But that's all on me, I ended up painting the car myself. Hopefully bringing this thread back to life will let people know that sometimes life happens, gets in the way, but keep at it.
Just like now, I have time to sit here an update this cause I'm recovering from shoulder surgery. It will be a few weeks before I can get back out in the garage.
A few people commented they enjoyed reading through and seeing the pictures so that's exactly what I'm going to do....keep posting pictures of the teardown/progress till I can get back at it.

Re: Steve's IROC Z

In a couple of the pictures you may notice orange dolly wheels under the front-end. I bought an old K-member from a TGO member and mounted those wheels so I could move the car around while leaving the original available to be cleaned up and painted. I also wanted to be able to assemble the drive-train on the original since I removed it out the bottom.

Re: Steve's IROC Z

After removing everything within reason, I cleaned it up, scuffed everything with scotchbrite pad and taped up the stuff I didn't want painted...AC box, brake booster, main wiring harness, etc..
2K primer
Base
and with Clear

Re: Steve's IROC Z

I used these Spray Max cans underhood. They have a good fan spray pattern and you can turn the nozzle 90 degrees for either a vertical or horz spray. They come in 1K or 2K with the button you push in on the bottom of the can to activate it. You can buy about any color primer and you can get custom color mixed base. A friend uses these for some exterior spot repair. I don't have any experience with there longevity, but I think it'll be fine out of the sun underhood.
I wasn't ready to buy the exterior RED just yet so these worked out great. A few years later it still looks good.

Re: Steve's IROC Z

K member and LCAs cleaned up and painted. I used Eastwood Extreme Chassis Black on these parts. It seems to be a nice thick coating and looks great.
All new Moog bushings & ball joints.

Pulling fenders & doors. Stripping the car down to bare steel since were changing the color and I don't know whats under this paint. Starting over should give the best paint job in the end, especially since I'm a rookie.
